Is it me or do Space Marines suck?

I\'ll likely get crucified but ... bleah ... Space Marines. Don\'t get me wrong, I like WH40k and all that good stuff and they make for some great artwork but unless you are working on a champion, librarian or some other such \'big fella\', the plain ol\' Space Marines just seem like so much wasted plastic and pewter to me.

Agree? Disagree? Wanna draw and quarter me?

Can you go into more detail of why you think space marines suck? I have\'nt painted many myself because I think I would get bored, but they look good when you see an army of them.

I quite like the clean sculpted lines of a marine in power armour. Can get a bit dull doing lots of them at once though.

Plus in my opinion, if you can get a painting technique to work on a marine [flat unforgiving surfaces] then it will generally work when applied to other minis...

I wouldn\'t goung as far as to say the suck, but marines are generally not my cup of tea.:)

I like seeing well painted space marines, but I\'m not that thrilled about painting them.

I have never been too much into the Space Marines and such, but with the recent \"Dawn of War\" computer game, I have to say my interest is peaked...

Here are two \"space marines\" that I saw recently....I would have to say these definately DO NOT SUCK!

Wel, i love space marines, it´s true one gets bored when dealing with a lot of them, but that´s the case with all kinds of minis, be it orcs or eldar or whatever; I think the concept of the standard space marine is a good one, they´re easy to paint but you can turn them into something special if you like; the plastics are nice too.
I´ve painted quite some different space marine, from old 2nd ed. ones over normal plastc guys to the grey knights, and I enjoyed all of them. For me, my recnt Crimson Fist project also disproved the fact that you can´t turn a normal SM guy into something neat.:)

I painted up my Space Wolves and NEVER want to have to deal with another marine...... well, maybe I might try some chrome NMM on that new marine commander I bought.......:)

Hmm..

I have a dilemma...The new SMs leave me cold, but I really love the old 1980\'s rogue trader SMs. Boy, do they have character!!

...in my own, very humble, opinion:innocent:

Heh, truth be told I just wanted to stir the pot more than anything but honestly, I still don\'t like them.

To me they are a bit \'bland\', though as pointed out above, an artist (notice the word ... artist) can turn one of these into something rather spectacular ... but then again, they can do that for a lump of greenstuff too.

The average painter, and some above average, just don\'t seem to do anything with these that \'grab me\'. Clean lines, yes, and now that its been mentioned, I have a figure that I don\'t mind dunking over and over while trying out NMM for the first time (picked some up in a bitz box) but overall .... they just don\'t do it for me.

Now, that being said, it doesn\'t have to be so detailed that I\'m wowed by it, just something that looks interesting. Of course, interest and beauty are in the eye of the beholder. I personally love critters, creatures, monsters, orks and the whole like like that. I know there has to be people that hate the buggers though.

But to me, they have personality where as the Space Marines (the joe-blow fellow, not the biggun\'s) just don\'t.

While I\'m at it, and since its been brought up, what do the rest of you think about the new Space Marines vers. the old ones? Some seem to be ranting and raving while others are a solid \'meh on them.

\'meh ....

but so many Minis of that era were very characterful not just the Space Marines....In todays era of mass production and plastic kits it does seem that character gets put on the back burner...

I am a big fan of the old Rogue Trader marines, though I remember saying to a friend of mine when the first one was given away as a freebie in White Dwarf that I thought they wouldn\'t catch on.How wrong was I???
They did have a lot more character in fact in the beginning in the various adverts that were given away they used to be given names (but then so did all the ranges).
As for the new ones they are ok but can be very boring to paint when doing whole squads of them.
Still some of the character minis are nice.

The regular, gaming painted, ultra marine color sceme SM figures may be a bit bland, but.....

1- the pewter models such as champs and heavy bolters are wicked sick

2- characterful conversions on them still hold very cool

3- there is still tons apon tons of cool color scemes like...red blended to a yellow which meet in the middle to form orange and such

4- like 3, the flat surfaces hold true for awsome blending and cool decals

But of course, my opinion, and u might not think so. to each his own, huh?

My opinion is that plastic space marines are very difficult to paint well, i remember some years ago i\'ve done some try with very bad final result, give an ork to a novice and maybe he will turn it in a decent mini , give him a space marine and.....
Today with layering tech on my hands is \"relatively\" easy and ever funny to paint them, but blending is still a nightmare.
I don\'t think they sucks anyway.

As with ANY artwork, it\'s not so much the subject as it is what YOU DO with the subject. If you look at any great art piece, it ususlly is something rather ordinary done in an extraordinary way. Space Marine...........whatever, put your heart into it. Take it as a challage. Can I do something fantastic out of something that may be mediocre????

I like them.

The old ones have more character, but I\'m not thats really fitting for them. I\'d like to see a few more bare head varients though.

As already mentioned, its what you do with them that counts, the new plastics have massive amounts of possibilities for conversions.

Trying to make a Space marine interesting...

Some time ago a complete dipstick even got his arm twisted to organise a competition...

http://www.coolminiornot.com/forums/viewthread.php?tid=1406

It had one entrant:bouncy:

Of course, nowadays, we would just give the prize straight to Cyril:D
