Is it really not even average?

Agreed. This is cool mini or not, not cool base or not. Besides that the pic is blurry and you can\'t really tell what that white thing is, I\'m guessing by the colour some type of horned skull. That skull also has a rather bad mold line problem.

Well, I don\'t think the lack of a mini is the problem. A top view just doesn\'t really give a feel for what it looks like. A couple views from the side would help. Plus its a bit fuzzy. Photography skill counts more than painting skill. The medium here is images.

dude the pic sucks. one view, too dark, can\'t tell what the lump down the bottom is - a skull?

and it\'s just a base, so i wouldn\'t vote it more than a 5 anyway (unless it were a mega diplay piece)

I know what you mean. I was deeply hurt at some of my votes that I got, but I realized that as time goes by, the bar on what is \"tabletop\" keeps rising.

Indeed, look at old stuff from 2002, 2003 that is rated a 6 or 7, but which is absolutely crap from today\'s standards.

Think of it another way... today\'s 4.5\'s are what used to be a 6 or 6.5 only a couple of years ago. In other words, the voting system is completely meaningless as people\'s tastes and expectations change.

I think that if you\'d put the last two pics from your blog together and posted it, the base would have definitely scored higher. But as freak mentioned, as it stands, its only a base. (No pun intended there)

It is a cool enough looking base. I would address the mould lines on the skull because as much as they stand out in the pic it will really hurt the overall appearance once you do put a fig on it.

Also as someone who scores pretty low myself, don\'t take it personal. The average member here is an above average person, and they will give you low scores, but as you\'ve found from this thread, also give you advice, encouragement, and inspiration.

If you are looking to become a more talented painter you ARE at the right place and you ARE getting tips from the best people (I speak of the other people, I am here to learn like you!).

My first figs I posted here I sort of was in the same boat as you, I thought they would recieve 9\'s, maybe 8\'s at the low end. When the poll numbers came back WELL shy of that I looked around and am now in complete agreement and am holding my work up against the numbers I sort of expected to get initially (Insert delfating balloon noise to represent my ego HERE).

Here\'s a tip I did, and it\'s perfectly anonymous. Pick the score you thought your base should recieve. For me it was 8\'s. Set your filter to that number and look for about 50 pics. See? The scoring here is harsh but the work that achieves those scores is AMAZING!

I hope you weren\'t discouraged from your score, and I hope you will take the time to post your WIP pics and some of your finished work here as you will get the best painters on the planet giving you specific advice on how to improve your results. How awesome is that!

yep, what they all said. it can be an eye opener when you first submit. regardless of time there will always be stuff you submit that will be scored below what you think and some harder. Scores are getting even harder these days as the standard goes up. look at some of the older stuff on here, it would probably score a point or two less if it went on now

Never assume that mold lines etc. won\'t be visible when everything is done. If you can see it and reach it, then remove it! It\'s better to spend 15 minutes removing something that turns out to be completely blocked by something, than to realise too late that you should have removed a mold line that turns out to be perfectly visible when the mini is all done.

You cannot get upset about getting a 4.6 on a rock. It is just a rock. Put a mini on it and it will instantly go to a 6.5 or higher. Unless this is suppose to be another mini representing frodo baggins wearing the one ring. :bouncy:

Thanks for all the comments and now that I\'ve checked it out there aren\'t that many bases that have got a five.
@Ritual: I\'ve tried sticking my mini to the base and you\'re right the mold line do show. Thanks.

@James Sequeira: You know those stones under the high elf\'s wizard\'s foots , well as I mine broke when I was taking ot to a friends house I decided that I would use them to make a base for another mini. I also thought the mage looked better with out anything on his base.:D
