Issues with Testor's Dullcote

Hi all,

Just wanted to run this by you chaps, perhaps someone has encountered this before. I'm having some issues with Testor's Dullcote - the can splutters instead of sprays, and even when it does spray properly, it leaves 'bubbling'. It is as if air bubbles are trapped beneath the lacquer, resulting in a paint bubbling result.

I've e-mailed Testor's customer support already, but with the Christmas period, I doubt any answers are forthcoming. Conditions in which I sprayed and resulted in this were:

• No paint additives used EXCEPT Tamiya acrylic thinner and water.
• Temperature clocked at 22 degrees Celsius.
• Humidity clocked at about 50%.
• The can placed into a cup of warm water for 2 minutes, and was subsequently shaken in a paint shaker for 2 minutes.

Has anyone encountered this before? Any suggested solutions?

Is the nozzle partially clogged? This could prevent the lacquer from atomising properly. Hold the can upside down and spray to clear it, or pull the nozzle off and clean with enamel thinner.

Usually a can starts spluttering when it gets low on propellant. How long have you had the can?

This was from a fresh can. It has never been used. I did check the nozzle after spraying, and no, there was no clogging at all.

Could be a bad batch. Wait and see what Testor's says.

If you've another can swap the nozzle, if it changes things there's your answer.
If not it points towards the possibility of the valve on the can being "Iffy" in which case the can's as close to buggered as Julian Clary.
Had a similar issue with GW's Chaos Black spray a few years ago, but was able to get the can swapped at the store.

One of my cans was doing the same, sputtering and spraying out from under the nozzle a bit. It seemed partially clogged from the start. Luckily it wasn't affecting the models at all, so I was able to get away with building a big blast shield out of masking tape around the top of the can to keep me dry

sounds like a bad nozzle. Try swapping it out and see if that helps (old rattle can junkies keep an assortment, cone, fan, etc.)
