30 mins ago. i knew 3 mins after it happened. im working late, voluenteering my time to help students with their independant projects. i was moving glassware between my lab/office and the classroom i teach in. trips back and forth, 2-5 mins each. i came back and it was gone; they didnt even take my i pod, just the computer. it, and my order forms, secure student information. financial information, porn, and umm....oh yeah, my thesis work (only a year and a half of backbreaking science, no big deal) which were all on my computer.

im dazed.

wow.

now that\'s a real bummer there fella I feel for ya..I was on my way back from a meeting last year and someone snatched my laptop on the train....luckily they ran straight off the train into my workmate who had also got off they did this as the train pulled off and I had an agonising wait until the next station to know wether they got the Top back or not.
luckily they did and the guy was arrested but the Laptop was busted in the process managed to recover some of my work but not all. My advise is change evry password you have online as all too many software programms autoatically store these on your system for ya now and that can really run havoc..
the loss of the work is a tough break and as for the Porn.............Real tragedy....

hope you get it sorted pal.

I\'m very sorry to hear that. Thefts on campus are all too common, as the security notice says \"it only takes 7 seconds\". I hope you had backups of your thesis at least.

One of the reasons I have every thing backed up onto DVD\'s and also on a portable hradrive. It aint right it has to be done but these are the times we live in.

I would stress the changing all your password as well. Sorry for your loss.

That\'s sad. Did you have a back-up? I need to do that very soon I feel. Have too much to loose on this computer.. especially my mini-folder sorted by artist :)

That is a real shitter mate, sorry to hear that.
The worst part is that the scum who took it done so whilst you was voluntary helping others.
Hope it gets sorted.

A number of years ago a similar thing happened to me... They came into my office which was in the wharehouse grabbed the laptop off my desk and were gone, took me a few min just to figure out what had happened when I came back. Luckily it was a work laptop and not out of my pocket.

Tough break for you, I feel for ya. :(

no backups, unfortunately. i have my bench notes, but its still a lot of work i lost. in my line of work i need a computer, so i need to buy another one asap. i had the unpleasant duty of telling my fiance that we wouldnt get the honeymoon we\'d been planning for 2 years. it was bad. i may have to sell most of my minis (ha! who am i kidding!).

i have an amusing theft story
my mate works in the howels in cardiff and has dor some time, last week(saturday i think) he was on the tills and he saw a guy nicking a radio, not sure of what to do he walked over to the man and put him in an armlock and threw him to the floor. when the police got there they went down the station(police not train) for a statement .when the thieve realised it was gunna get big he charged my mate of assault!!! luckly he got off with nothing due to th thieve having loads of other thefts on his record

No good deed goes unpunished

That really sucks, man. Your thesis, financial records, student info, that stuffs all replaceable, but your porn!!!!!!:( How low can people get.

Seriously though, it really does suck.

I understand how you are feeling about this.
It\'s one of the side issues that I have to deal with at work. Of course the primary concern is not (for us at least) the theft but any pupil information on the machines.

But the loss of all your on data is an absolute swine.

Aye, exposure of confidential data, or loss of irreplacable data is far more destructive than the \'mere\' cost of a new computer - it can kill a business. Soul-destroying is not the computer, but the loss of the thesis, and knowing the fianceé\'s disappointment.

I hear you on the p0rn too, but; you could probably keep yourself occupied while you download it all again. ;)
