No I've not gone and become an "empire employee" or joined a football supporters club, but after years of faithful service from my HP Touchpad, I've had to bite down on the bullet and get a replacement as updates have stopped and faults are starting to occur more often. (Like having to type blind because the characters won't show).

So Fran and I gritted our teeth , individually of course, and purchased an iPad Air apiece.
Now having downloaded and installed the blindingly obvious Apps, Kindle, Facebook(*), Google etc... Anyone got any recommendations for other apps?
Reasons why would be helpful.

(* Yes Facebook, despite the fact I dislike it, it's the primary communication link for the Manchester Urban Sketchers group I've joined. Www.urbansketchers.org )

If you use flickr, the Flickr studio is a good app. The free books app is also a good one to have if you plan to read on your iPad. For games, obv angry birds and one I quite liked was shark dash. Tv catchup, good for watching pointless when doing the washing up. I player, ditto. Do you like anime? If so, the check out Crunchyroll.

What a cool group to belong to. Their page is really awesome and inspiring.
Yep. They do Sketchcrawls, a bit like Pubcrawls but drawing instead of drinking.
I'm attending my first tomorrow, in Manchester, let's hope I don't go all "stagefright" and can't draw.

Jo, thanks for the flickr recommend, didn't think of that. BUT after celebrating 40 years of working in IT yesterday (WTFlip did all those years go?) I still can't reconcile computers and games, yes I'm that much of a Luddite.

Ok games are out ye gods man what do you do with yourself I mean talk to people or something?!! Er well I think the 3.5 d and d apps are damn good if you are into all that which if memory serves right you are so d20 Rules, DnD Sheets, Initiative are all must haves! Really really useful to have to check up rules and the initiative app is a godsend especially if your like me and you end up playing to the wee hors of the morning. If you are into he piazo pathfinder stuff which we occasionally are then PFR is great as well. If you are into your astronomy which is my ultimate passion then exoplanet is a total must! Oh yeah the kindle app is great and the bbc news app is super. But you got to get games apps mate my favourite which is fantastic is baldurs gate and baldursgate 2 fantastic second edition D and D best game of all time!

Sounds great fun! I hope all goes well. I hate drawing something new in front of other people, if i have it down and am shading and know where I am going with it, I am more relaxed!

No idea on apps I'm afraid as it depends on your interests really. I may however suggest Art rage if it is available. You have probably heard of it, its on Ipad as well as PC in case you did not realise that. There are also apps for a hand posing tool, quite handy if you figure sketch and an app for a full posable figure/head with lighting etc. these are relatively cheap apps.

Buy a stylus - the expensive Wacom one with palm rejection is worth it if you're into drawing.

Drawing: Sketchbook Pro, Artrage, Adobe Ideas, Paper

Photography: Photoshop Express, Flickr, Photogene (my personal fave for editing photos), Instagram, Flickrstackr, Filmic Pro.

Shopping: Ebay, Amazon

Reading: Kindle, Stanza, iBooks, iBooks Author

Forums: Tapatalk, Forum Runner

Notes and docs: iDo Notepad, Docs2Go, iAnnotate PDF, Evernote, Sundry Memos, UPAD, Goodreader, Bamboo Paper

Doc/cloud storage: Dropbox, Google Drive, Skydrive, Box

Other: MobileRSS, Google Chrome, Audioboo, Skype, YouTube, Vimeo, iMovie, GarageBand, Remote, IMDB, and banking apps - ASB do a fantastic one that allows me to do everything and even synchs with Trademe :)

Welcome to the sheep family :) Although they cost a lot and aren't apps, getting a decent smart case is worth it. A nice stylus is good too, avoid very cheap ones and I personally prefer the "fabric" ends.

App wise, I think the apps I use most are podcasts, iBooks, Dropbox, eBay, Argos, Asda/Tesco and iPlayer. Amazon occasionally gets used, along with twitter and linkedin. I know you're not a Facebooker, so not going to suggest that :p
