James' non-profit projects thread!

Hello!

I've been painting tons of stuff for Ebay recently, but it's not all about the money making. I have various other projects on the go and figured it wouldn't be a bad plan to make a separate thread for them. Now seems to be a particularly good time to do it, because I'm just starting out on a few different things. Two competition entries, and a gift. In theory, I'll be trying my hardest to slow down a little and do extra special paint jobs on these models. Not a lot to see just yet, but hopefully this is where the good stuff will lurk soon! :D

GW Nottingham painting competition - Duel
I've only started frequenting my local GW again recently, and I guess I should try and get involved. I am a big fan of making dynamic duels too, so this comp suits me. The rules are pretty basic - a small diorama consisting of two approximately evenly matched miniatures in combat on a single base. So, I'll be doing a little scuffle between a Wolf Guard Terminator and a Dark Eldar Wych. I plan on having the Wych suspended up there somehow, probably with a pin hidden away in some sort of hanging ribbon or chain. Haven't quite finished of the positioning yet, the Wolf Guard will have feet sculpted in so he looks like he's falling back a bit, and obviously there will be no paint pots in the final effort! Mould lines still need to be dealt with. This one has a fairly tight deadline of 24 September, so I'd best get busy.

Warhammer Forum All Hallows Eve challenge
A very open brief for this one. It has to be a Halloween themed model on a single base. I've had Neran waiting to be painted for years and years. I've always been to chicken. He's got so much detail, he's so cool, there are other totally amazing paint jobs out there of him. Sod it, it's time to man up and get him done! Thinking of putting him in a pumpkin field for the base, but would welcome suggestions. 23 October deadline, so nice and chill on that one! :D

Wedding gift
My friends are getting married at the end of this month. In a crazy twist of fate, they both like GW stuff, so I guess I should do a GW cake topper type effort. Mark likes Black Templars, Kait likes Slaanesh, so I'm going to try and bring them together. I've mocked up a Photoshop effort of what the final thing will look like. The two models fit together surprisingly well. Instead of a standard Slaanesh model I'll be converting a Dark Eldar Lhamaean. The Templar will stay black, but the Slaanesh lady will be predominantly white. Best to stick with tradition here. I may mount them on a mini cake. Not sure yet. In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium there is only cake! Models ordered, 30 September deadline. Eeeek!

Cake idea is awesome. I like the duel too, althought the termie looks like he tripped over a rock or something.

Love the cake idea! A nice novel way to decorate, bet your friends will love it.

My first thought on seeing the duel was is that an Empire guy laying the smack down on a termy? But on a closer inspection it looks more wytchy. I like it, though feet are needed lol. Can't wait to see it painted.

Those naughty Dark Eldar, having a Dark Flesh ain't enough they have to try and steal the paint that Termie is guarding.

Cool choice of minis for the cake. That hand holding must have made for a tricksy pick.

Finally managed to get the Lhamaean mini after it went out of stock at my local GW. I've got the build sorted and I need to get green stuffing to finish off the models.

Haven't done any sculpting for a long time, so I'm hoping I still have some ability, otherwise this is going to look a bit pants.

I have to say, these two Finecast minis actually do the name justice for the most part. There are a few little bits that haven't cast properly, like the Champion's pendant bottom and the Lhamaean's colar, but the quality is so sharp. Also, this is far and away the easiest material I've ever converted. The Champion's hand is a prime example. It was so easy to trim off his thumb and carve in the shape of the top two fingers using an xacto blade. With plastic it would have been tough and with metal pretty impossible, but the resin was awesome to chop at.

The duel has been put on the back burner, because the GW comp didn't get much interest and was written off. I may go back to it some time in the future, but for now, cake topper is the focus!

Oh, and I noticed the mould line on the claw top from the photo and have removed it. :D

OK. I have the rest done. It's not perfect, but it'll do I think. I was less sure about the hands until I desaturated the image to make the green stuff look more blended. They work OK and I think that when I add paint it should tie it together more. Well, that's the theory anyway. :) Now I'm off to get ready to head out for a few beverages. Painting tomorrow with any luck.

Finally started to paint this, a day or two too late in truth. Shouldn't have any problem getting it finished tomorrow night though. Seem to be having a real problem with my camera this evening, just didn't get the light balance right, so it looks a bit blown out.

Basic base has been made, and I now need to get busy painting the other half as it's the wedding tomorrow... I've just sprayed the base colour down on a Skaven Blood Bowl team, am messing around with some new miniatures that came through the post, checking the forums and am pondering eating ice cream. D'oh! I am just not a fan of painting black, but can't put this off forever. It's time to get busy. Focus needed. Wish me luck!

Done, and I ate some ice cream and faffed with my new minis too. Hurrah! My camera has no charge though, so just waiting on that, then I'll do some snaps. :D
