Japanese skin tones versus \"flesh\" tones - repair?????

I am apinting samourais and they look far too er... how do they call it in the US... Caucassian???
Here we just say \"pinkish\" :drunk::drunk:
I read the article on skin tones and it\'s very useful, but my question is: how to japanify a middle of the road tone of skin?
I think it should be more brown green, but I dare not imagine how to apply that over the pinkish tones!!! (in fact \"flesh\" tone as it\'s often called by white people like me... shame and apologies to all my asian and african pals)

ps: Japanese skin tone is different from other east asian skin tones. (and vice versa)

Are you saying you\'ve painted the skin on the minis and you want to tweak it to look less European and more Japanese?

If so, I\'d try glazing what you already got with something greenish first (complementary colour to pink), very diluted, to tone down the pink a bit. Then I would glaze it with a more khaki brown colour to give it an Asian feel. Then you would probably need to retouch some highlights.

As long as you work with really thin paint you can always change course if you think it\'s going the wrong way. When you feel confident you can just add more layers to increase the effect.

Don\'t know if you HAVE the old GW flesh wash, but this would be JUST the time I\'d be trying it.

Although I think it might be more of a Chinese colour than Japanese, which are slightly different.

But maybe not noticable at 28mm lol

I don\'t want to offend any oriental people here saying this, but have you tried mixing in some yellow with the flesh colours?

DaN, don\'t think anybody should be offended by a fact. Otherwise, if anybody was to paint an African, we\'d have to talk around and say stupid things like \"the color that absorbs all frequencies\". Meh.

Anyway, for your study, here\'s a photo of my hand and my son\'s. Since he\'s half Japanese, you should be able to use it to get a good idea of the differences. And yes, there\'s a yellow tint to it. Top shot is in slightly overcast conditions, and the bottom is with a flash.

I\'m going to try the methods you guys so kindly shared with me - on test minis!!!!

nonsense! In fact both hands belong to Pegazus - he had the right one miniaturized... miniaturisation is very big in Japan ((c) Pinky and the Brain)

I tried on a sample a green wash - difficult to get it diluted enough and yet still pigmented.... :-c
Any suggestion in GW range?

I\'d use a green with a little bit of blue in it. And you\'re not supposed to really see the actual colour on the skin. Just tone down the pink and make it a little less saturated so that you can then tint the colour with what makes it look more Asian. I hope that makes sense.

It does!!! I just hope I can get the right green blue and right dilution! I\'m going to Japanise some dwarfs to test this (Japanese Dwarfs.... odd concept!)

If you get into converting the figures, you should do a little GS and give them chopsticks and sushi. Oo! A little dwarf sushi bar!

I don\'t think the exact green blue mix is that important. It\'s just something to cancel out the sort of peachy pink you\'ve got at the moment. And it\'s better to have the paint too thin and apply more layers than vice versa.

Hello, i was reading your thread, and i don\'t know if you every got a clear answer to this question. The reason (near as i can tell) that people talk about GW flesh was in the past tense is that the new formula (which you can still get) is a VERY different color than the original version. The original flesh wash (which you can\'t get anymore) had a lot more yellow to it, and was less intense of a brown orange wash. Anyway, hope this helps and proves to be accurate....
