Jericho\'s Dark Angel (and various side-projects) project log

Well it\'s official, I\'m hooked on Dark Angels :)

The original plan a few months ago was to do a pure Deathwing army, but I held back a bit on the project due to the upcoming Codex. Well I bought the big army box when it came out, and have changed my mind a bit on the color scheme and the army composition.

I\'m not sure how many of the Green Marines will be in the final army list (despite having some awesome plastic parts available now) but I will surely be adding some Ravenwing to my collection!

I\'ve had a quick paint test figure up on another thread, basically trying to keep the color dark and dull compared to the traditional hilight schemes involving Snot Green and whatnot. More like the army book cover really. Lots of stone grey colors in the scheme as well, I really like that.

Since that photo was done I painted half the eagle in bone colors to compare it with the gold. Both look good we\'ll see which direction it goes :)

To get me in the spirit of the army a bit more I started work on the LE Master from the army box. Very cool figure, I like the hooded look very much. Probably won\'t see any action on the battlefield (unless I use him as a stand-in for Azrael, he\'s an absolute beast-mother in the new Codex) but he\'ll definitely get me enthousiastic about the force while I decide whether or not do get resin bases and shoulder pads for the army.

The tabard was done in a color I first noticed on Jakob Neilsen\'s Butcher of Khardov. Codex Grey shaded with Scorched Brown and hilighted with Bleached Bone. Looks really cool, I like the color a lot. The cloak over his arms will be bone, with a red DA icon I think. Might change that once the bone is done, we\'ll see :)

Hopefully before too long I\'ll have at least 1700 pts of Deathwing / Ravenwing models painted up. In the end I\'ll probably do 40 Deathwing models + HQ figures, and I\'ll probably stop at about 12 bikes and 4-6 Landspeeders. That\'s the plan anyway, hopefully to be accomplished in a year or two.

Oh yeah, I\'m also trying to figure out what to do about his Iron Halo, it wasn\'t cast too well and one side looks bigger than the other. I have other Halos about but they would require some serious modification to fit the tight spot between his head and backpack.

I don\'t plan on taking any shortcuts on these guys. Maybe not absolutely 100% on every single model but I plan on making them head and shoulders above my other armies, including the Wood Elves of Never-Finishedness.

There\'s a bunch of art in the Codex that I plan on recreating in model form, even if I\'ll never use the figs in an army list.

It\'s not crooked or anything, the spikes on one side are longer than the other for some reason. Didn\'t look like a miscast where it\'s all lumpy and smooth or anything, they were all looking sharp but the spike on the end near his gun isn\'t nearly the size of the one on the opposite end.

Update on the cloak, the basecoat, shading and first 2 hilights are done. I\'ve had to do it super watery and it\'s almost like washing in the feathered shades and hilights. Graveyard Earth is a wicked color but has a very weak pigment so I knew from the start just how heinous it was gonna be working on such a big smooth area.

Looks okay to me though, a few touchups necessary before I blend the rest of the way on up to Bleached Bone then White.

Should stand out fromt he grey tabard though, which was the main concern. I didn\'t want the two colors to be very similar despite having the same colors in the shades and hilights :D

<edit> Fixed the silver spot on the back of his head... someone please take my brushes away! I\'ve been painting for about 5 hours and haven\'t started my research yet... I have an essay proposal due tomorrow and it needs a bibliography and thesis :p </edit>

After a quick look at my dried up pallete, I\'ll give a quick description of what I did :D Okay here goes:

1) Basecoat of Scorched Brown
2) Mix with a bit of Codex Grey, get everything but the cracks
3) Mix in about 50/50 with Codex, feather over the previous layer leaving a bit showing
4) Mix in a lot more Codex so it\'s just slightly pinkish-brown, and again feather it over.

5) You should have I\'d say 65% of the surface of the tabard being pure Codex at this stage.

6) Mix a bit of Bleached Bone into the Codex. Feather up like before.
7) Yet more Bleached Bone, start to use more sparingly.
8) Lots of Bleached Bone, used only in a few key spots.

I did a glaze of Brown Ink at one point as well, very thinned down I think it was between stages 2 and 3. Could be wrong.

Also, the hood being very flat, had way less shading than the rest.

thanks for that. it really doesnt look like you have a flat codex grey there at all, it just looks brown to bone.

now i just have to try to recreate.

There\'s not a lot of it left showing after the Bone hilights. I think I might\'ve had a bit of brown left on my brush when I put the \"pure\" Codex on him as well, it had an ever so slight tint in there that might\'ve helped it look brown-bone like you said.

OK I did all my research, so I decided I could spare the half hour needed to finish the bone on the cloak :D

Painfully boring but it looks good so I\'m happy. Again a few areas I want to touch up (the corner on the back mainly) but I\'m happy with the colors so far.

Included the third angle to show off the shoulder pad area, I like how the hilights and shadows worked out there.

Glad you like him :D Hopefully I\'ll have some more time to spend on the guy tonight, won\'t be til relatively late though since Thursday is home of 75% of the good new shows on television. The only one falling outside NBC\'s Thursday night lineup is Battlestar Galactica, which is also an NBC Studio show. Sooo good :)

<edit> It\'s not Thursday, is it :p </edit>

Nice work

Im just guessing but did you add just a bit of ivory or white to the DA green for the highlight color on the regular marine?

Codex Grey actually.

The color I had in my head was 50/50 Dark Angels Green and Catachan Green. I shaded that with a lot of black and did some hilighting by mixing in Grey. The 50/50 mix can be seen as the edge hilight on the back of the knees.

There\'s probably gonna be even more shading on the real minis, I want the color good and dark :)

I almost forgot! I did some more work today between my afternoon and night classes. Not a lot, but I had to finish up that assignment I never really finished from last night ;)

Pretty much just reworked a couple spots on the bone cloak and blocked out the logo for the reds. Still 1-2 touchups I wanna do, but not much you could see without a super close look at the model... or 8.1 megapixel closeups ;) Those reveal a few mistakes too believe it or not.

I finally passed my Reserve roll, I should definitely consider joining the Ravenwing so I won\'t miss out on the action.
