Job interview

I have a job interview on Wednesday and I need some advice.

I have been at the company I\'m with for 2 years and have advanced very quickly. However I have a new manager and I don’t trust him to allow me further progress through the company, also I don’t believe the company is all that stable.

The job I\'m going for is a fixed contract till July 09 with the possibility of a permanent contract after that. The company is a very successful events coordination company.

I don’t think staying where I am will give me any more experience than I already have, but moving to this new job will give me a better profile on my CV and more experience. What I\'m stuck on is the 09 contract, do I risk job security for more experience and only a possibility of a permanent contract or stick it out and hope for the best at my current company.

Well, first of all I\'d say go to the interview and try to see if you can make the contract safer for you in terms of job security (they have to give you a permanent contract if you have satisfactory result or somthing like that...). I only know French contract laws, but I\'m sure clauses like that exists pretty much everywhere.

How hard you can bargain depends on a lot of things though. If they sought you out, how far along in the recruitement process you are (if they do more than one interviews). In any case I\'d sugest talking it out with them, and see what you can both come up with.

I\'d also suggest talking with your new manager and voice your concerns, don\'t tell him you\'ve been looking elswere, but you can tell him you might consider it as an option if you don\'t feel you\'re not going to get enougth opportunities in the company.

Just my 2 cents, and since I\'ve never actually worked in a company it\'s all from theoretical teachings :p

in my experience, if you are more than half decent at a temp contract, it will usually turn into a permanent one, especially if it is mentioned already (if you were just covering maternity leave, i wouldn\'t count on it for example). i\'d be tempted to go for it in your shoes

disclaimer - i am no way responsible if you are crap at the new job!

All I can say is I stayed in a job I had, for more cash, this was only offered when I had found a new job with better prospects. My decision, marked the beginning of the end of my career in architecture.

Security is another word for being scared of the unknown, get out there while your young, and achieve what you know is possible.

If you dont stagnation sets in, and its the beginning of the end:D

Best of luck though

I have voiced my concerns to my current manager and his relpy was that he didnt know the company well enough at the moment to say anything on the subject. Which in part is fair enough but still not good enough.

My other concern about my current job is the fact that we are a hotel chain and where I work we are the central reservations office. We used to do hotels that we did\'nt own but this has fell by the wayside, with this and an uncertain financal situation in the company I can see us being cut out to bring cost\'s down. Hell its what I would do if I was a the top!!

I\'m really up for the interview and have copied and pasted stuff from their website and put it into Word and gone through and highlighted parts of it so I can tie my answers into what they are all about. I have also compiled a list of questions about the company, their operation and how they work.

The way I\'m looking at it is that if I\'m looking for work at the moment then I would be for the next year or so if I stayed at my current company. So therefore going to this new job with the contract till 09 wont be much different than staying where I am and looking for a new job however I will get different experience with a good company and may even get a perminant place out of it.

If you are unsure about your current job or are not enjoying it, start looking for a new one. If you are unsuccessful, then you haven\'t lost anything (except maybe some hope) but if you do gain another job, then bonus\' all round. I am currently in a job that i like, with great promotion prospects and working with people who value my work and what i have to offer. I have been through lots of job training in my position, with my company even paying for me to get a Diploma in Frontline Management. At the moment i am helping to prepare and plan for the State Premier (like a Governor) to come up. 3 years ago i started at the organistaion as a casual field worker on a 16 week contract. If you are good, the new company will keep you.

Really you have to follow your heart so to speak. Especially if you are young and unencumbered by family obligations. Personally I don\'t much like changing jobs but it is inevitable at times.

While it is great to gather as much knowledge as possible on a prospective employer to ensure that is a place you would like to work, I\'m not a big fan of tailoring my answers to suit the company as that is just setting yourself up for a disappointment.

With my last corporate move (and hopefully my last ever) I carefully selected a company that by all my research seemed to be the best for me then I went after the position I wanted. I looked at no other options and I didn\'t have to tailor my responses to the companies desires as my natural answers were already similar. Mind you I\'m likely a bit older than you and have less of a need/desire to \'fool around\' (no offense intended what-so-ever). I have had a job offer from every interview I\'ve ever attended and never been fired, mostly due to careful corporate selection (and a rather limited number of applications and/or jobs held). BTW, I\'m starting the new position I mentioned on June 6 so I\'m right there with you on job changes (and a major career change for me).

I know I tend to turn everything around to be about me. I guess I\'m a bit self-indulgent but hopefully I communicated that story in such a way as to be helpful to you. In the end what is best for you is typically the right choice no matter how it seems. Life\'s to short to be disappointed, displeased, disheartened, or any other \'dis\'. My brother makes over $250,000 a year as a lawyer and hates his job, he\'s been considering a change for over a year now and will likely drop his salary by half when he does but he\'s starting to realize that happiness and contentment are more important than cash now.

Good luck with your decision. If you follow your heart whatever you decide will be correct. :drunk:

For $250,000 i\'d wipe peoples arses lol, thats serious cash, i\'d pimp myself for that no problem, save it all and then get a job, I liked when I was secure:D

You obviously have been reading my window breaking thread lol :drunk:

I now what your saying about tailoring my answers etc. I\'m not going to go in to the interview and tell them what they already know about their own company, I\'ve used the reaserch as you did to make sure that I\'m compatiable with the comapany if that makes sense.

I think I have made my decision to move on today, as I\'m sat in a freezing cold office on a bank holiday Monday. Its my 7th day at work in a row and my next day off is Wednesday, the day of my interview. No one in the office has thought to thank me as I\'m working so they can spend the time with their kids etc :flame::cussing::flame:

Best of luck to you, though if you go in with the right attitude as it seems you have you won\'t need the luck. :drunk:

It went quite well, I was very nervous but I got hold of my self before I went in and let my answers flow.

I think I came across confident, organized and profesional. However as the job was explained to me by the agent doesnt fit with what they told me.

What I thought it would be was event & conventions managment. It turns out that it will be 90% bed room reservations and 10% event & conventions. So unfortunatly after all the hype I dont think the 09 contract is worth the risk to be doing somthing I know a lot about already, I no longer feel that I will gain the extra experience I thought I would if I moved.

Which in truth is really gutting cause as the job was explained to me by the agent and from the companies website I was really excited. I wont know until Tuesday if I have got the job but after all the thinking I have already done I have to look at it from this new angle. Oh well :D
