Joe attempts to sculpt.

After years of fumbling around with GS - cursing it's unforgiving nature - and only using it for filling in bits and pieces, I thought it high time I sat down and gave sculpting a chance.

Strangely enough, I'm thoroughly enjoying the process, and have found that with the right tools GS isn't quite the bugger I thought it was going to be. Admittedly, the figure is rather messy, and has veered off so far from the original plan to be almost unrecognisable, but I think I've been bitten by the bug!

Here's where I've got to so far...

After countless attempts at doing a head, I've finally got something which (vaguely) looks sort of okay. Definitely the wrong thing to attempt for a first sculpt! However, it's on and now needs a bit more attention. I've got an idea for a hood, which should wrap itself around the back and (hopefully) link up with the cloth which is there already.

Strangely enough, the head is almost a dead ringer for a very old comic character I made years ago, so I've got some sort of empathy with it. The whole thing's now veering towards sci-fi rather than fantasy now though, but this isn't so bad I guess!

That's looking nice man. I kinda was expecting something the dog chewed on but there's some decent anatomy and detailing there, splendid job!

I like her! Great start. I like the idea of the hood to tie in to the scarf.

Not at all! I can empathize! When I started a full sculpt last year I forced myself to try a head the second or third session. I figured if I could do that then I wasn't so concerned about the rest. As you say, it turned out vaguely headish, but definitely recognizable, and made me feel a lot better about my chances to get something decent as the end result. (Of course I did make a new head a few weeks later after some practice).

Getting on with it. The arm has only got an extra 'base' on it - unfortunately something's come away on the insides, so no way I'm doing anything else on it until this batch of GS has cured.

The staff and hand obviously need work too - it's really a bit of a placeholder whilst I work out the ideas.

I think my mind is now on Dune - she reminds me of someone from the Lynch film (as opposed to the book, you understand ;) ).
