It is perspective...

I have never considered that preventing animals from escaping, holding them up by the tail, teasing them with food or waggling my offspring in front of them to be teasing either....

Seriously...it isn\'t teasing. People tease for fun, not humongous wodges of cash...that\'s called \'performance \':innocent::flip:

That doesn\'t detract from my respect for the man however, but he had more in common with PT Barnham than he did with St. Francis.

i wouldnt say he \"had it coming\" though. sure, he worked with dangerous animals, and firemen work with fire, and soldiers work with guns. to say that they \"had it coming\" is disrespectful, no? if you are driving, and die in a car crash, did you \"have it coming?\" i guarentee you he was better at dealing with dangerous animals than any of us are at driving.

@ finn: sure, he was a performer (i to remember the baby dangling incident) but anyone who champions a cause is a performer by necessity. if he hadent been, he wouldnt be on TV, spreading positive information about wildlife to our under educated world. our culture respects such audacity.

Of course if he had been annoying it purposefully then he made the wrong decision.

Of course it\'s as bad...but a wild animal handler being killed by a wild animal has a degree of \'expectation\' about it.
If he had been killed in a \'knitting incident\' I would of course agree with you.

Hey guys! Look what I got! *waves a wax effigy of finn exitedly*.

He wasn\'t aggravating the ray in any way. It just so happens that it was a high season for tiger sharks (a natural predator of the ray) and there were a number of people in the water. The ray got spooked and reacted.
This is coming from one of steves mates, eywitness and nature expert.

Call it performance or whatever you like, I suppose. To me, the man was an outspoken supporter of wildlife causes, who worked to bring more understanding to the \'average Joe\' about animals than almost anyone else I can think of. What you perceive as \'preventing animals from escaping\', I perceived as a man who was doing what he loved and treating even the most dangerous creatures in the world with respect and gentleness, while simultaneously trying to educate people about them.

Again.../shrug To each his own.

Just for the record he NEVER dangled his child in front of an animal. He was holding him when he was feeding a croc. You may not think its so different but it just goes to show how comfortable he felt when feeding his crocs. I dont think he would ever knowingly put his kids in danger I think he just has a different perspective of it that the rest of us. And even if he teased the odd snake the amount of good he did for education and conservation far outstrip a few pi$$ed of snakes. I for one will miss him and feel deeply for his family.

Sorry to bring a sad thread like this back up again, but something I heard on the news yesterday got me really angry.

Apparently in Australia, a large number of dead stingrays were found washed up on a beach with missing tails. They had bled to death.

Some wankers had gone out on a \"revenge mission\" to mutilate the poor things. It shows how fucking dense these people are - Steve Irwin would not be pleased with what they were doing, he would horrified. It wasn\'t the bloody stingray\'s fault that it killed him, let alone other stingrays for Christ\'s sake! It\'s an insult to his memory.
