If you are looking for affordable - chaos is the way to go. A heck of a lot of fewer guys,( lots of points/man )and still competative. Fun to paint and easy to convert/customise too.:D

Definitely stay away from Witch Hunters if price is a problem since the whole army is metal and expensive. Chaos is not that cheap if you play an army that summons alot of deamons. Each deamon unit is metal and you will be forced to buy them as well. I would say space marines are the most inexpensive of the ones you mentioned, however with the release of 5 new plastic terminators for $50 (yes, $10 a piece for a plastic model!) nothing is cheap when the GW name is on it!

me too!

Well, not \"just\", but I do hope to actually play this game soon!

I\'ve been collecting a couple armies over the last year n\' a bit. I started buying some Nurgle before I even considered playing simply because I liked the sci-fi zombie warrior appeal of the figures.

Then I saw some SOB, and I started putting together an army for them too. The thing that I\'ve found with them is they take quite long to paint as each mini tends to have lots of detail. And yeah, it\'s pretty much all pewter line, so it can be expensive.

Then I saw a Necron Wraith. I figured I wanted to paint it, but two armies on the go was enough. Nope. I had to start building a Necron army.

Currently, the Necrons are the closest to being completed & playable. I have a feeling that they might be a decent starter army for learning the game...

At least if I get bored of the Necrons--if they ever are fielded--then I\'ve got some other armies already on the go...and GW have got a good portion of my money over this last year!

I still stick by my statement- but of course you can spend a fortune on some of the bigger stuff. If you want Khorne- three boxes of beserkers and some bits- throw in a predator and a leader and you have a full 1700pt army with the fewest bucks I\'ve ever spent on an army and put it together in a single month to play in a local tournament.

Check out ebay like another esteemed colleague has stated. You can score some holla monster deals, esp on used if you don\'t mind stripping them and starting over.

Good point. I would suggest adding a defilier or some sort of other vehicle to the list of chaos but outside of that it seems pretty sound and solid as well as inexpensive.

Ebay is a great alternative too, I buy some of my troops there but also support my local gaming stores as well because without a positive cash flow there, I would be out of a place to game.

My roccomendation, pricewise, is avoid Tau. I play Tau, I love \'em, but you need jillions of the little midgets to field a playable army and you pay through the nose for it. Another decent point cost/actual cost army is the Eldar; the infantry isn\'t expensive, but you can build an HQ that\'s almost half of your fielded army easily enough just from blister packs (especially if you play Ulthwe. 250 points for Eldrad, whew...). The main thing about Eldar is that they have lots of elites, which come from blisters. A minimum squad of Warp Spiders will require two Spider blisters and an Exarch if you want to go that route. Finally, Eldar are really fun to paint (at least I think so).

Or you could be like me and have started in the late 80\'s when a rhino was $10lol

In fact I bought most of my 10000pt eldar army wayyyyy back then.

The defiler looks wicked- I think that is the puppy I\'ve been looking for:cool:thanks for the tip BH again:D
