What\'s all this about it being DQ\'d? Is that a hard and fast rule on the entry form or was it a judgement call?

yeah it was the religious iconography that was the problem. there was a massive hoo hah at time. i don\'t see the problem, the iconography doesn\'t really fit into 40k if you ask me. also the model is too busy for my liking. not that it isn\'t skillfully done

yeah, the painting itself is AMAZING (IMO) if not too busy. the colors scheme doesnt necesarrily jive with me but thats all subjective. All the free hand makes me want to throw all my brushes in a pile and light it.

(I stink at freehand)

I was never all that impressed with this model. There are far better examples of Freehand out there (the Bel\'akor from Italian GD a year or two back springs to mind) and the overall composition of this model kinda sucks (especially the ridiculous pose of the DP himself).

The back banner is probably the best part of the model. Quite well done, and in an interesting style, BUT the rest of the freehand on the model is completely excessive and serves no real purpose. Victor Hardy has more technical freehand ability than I do, obviously, but I really dislike his style. I think freehand is best when it\'s subtle and blends into the model. When it takes over and becomes freehand for the sake of freehand, I start docking style points extremely rapidly.

The whole debacle about religious imagery and the DQ I find to be kinda silly. Catholic imagery is not Warhammer imagery, and therefore breaks the Golden Demon rule that states everything should adhere to the established imagery/atmosphere of the Warhammer/LOTR universes. Some of the Warhammer art suggests classic art and its various styles/images, but it retains a distinct Warhammer subject and/or style at the same time. Victor Hardy\'s work does not.

I guess Warhammer has enlightened/poisoned my brain because when I typically see a non-diorama GW piece I look at it from a \"Would I want that in my army\" and for this piece I wouldn\'t.

The skill level displayed is insane. I can\'t believe someone was capable and WILLING to takt the time and patience to pull that off.

Another celebrated painter/modeler who\'s style I just couldn\'t get into was... Joe Orteza? Is that a dude? He made very skillful pieces but they were really, really sylized away from the GW style darkness I like so much.

I gave this model a 10, and I can\'t imagine someone not giving it a ten. Even if you hate the style of the piece the skill level is something most of us would sell our children for.

edit- Jercho-Not knocking your opinion or anything, but what did you give this model? Just curious. I agree with the style but I couldn\'t move my finger away from the ten button.

Apparently I gave the model 2 votes with an 8.5 average. I\'m not sure why I voted twice, or if they were separated by time, or what :p

Anyway I quickly scanned all the many many comments for the image, and I found this Tony Manero gem which I agree with 1200%:

\"8.5 i don\'t like the excessive use of freehands on wings and banners, and the christian iconology is totally useless.\"

lol

I didn\'t give it a 10 due to the composition of the piece. The large flat surface of the banner draws my eye to it and away from the rest of the mini.

BTW here\'s Franciuus\' Slayer Sword winner that I was referring to:

This painting masterpiece makes the Golgotha model look downright amateur-ish if you ask me. I still think there\'s a little bit too much stuff going on with the conversion, ie. the tabard should be smaller and the massive armor plate on his thigh isn\'t necessary, but the freehand itself really shines because it\'s far more subtle and the colors tie into the rest of the model far better. I\'d give this model a 9.5 compared to the 8.5 I give to Golgotha. Both lose points for the busy conversions, but the technical skill of Franciuus is simply higher IMO.

haha that just goes to tell.. I don\'t like the freehand on either of those two models. Both attempts are very ambitious but look \"forced\" in a very similar way comparing to those that are really good 2D artists. However stylewise/designwise I prefer Franciuus one and his freehand improved for later works. I in general really like franciuus bleak, grim, style of painting.

I like some of Hardys stuff as well but again those with less freehand. I like the style of the older Bloodthirster with the dreads. Just not the lining on the muscles. He also had a grim dark style early. I remember that the chaos lord he did win a SS with was an inspiration when I got back, just didn\'t like the freehand on it :p

If I\'m not mistaken Victor Hardy got his entries constructed by someone else to his direction, which would disqualify them now in any case.

However the whole discussion of this piece and it\'s disqualification in the UK was the subject of a long and somewhat bitter discussion on here.

Also, about the pose, I believe that I heard that he was stepping/stomping on a cross that was removed in an attempt to get the piece \"qualified.\" I could be totally wrong ... could just be hear-say. But, if it is the case, it would explain the slightly peculiar step the demon prince is making.

Makes sense! :) but I wonder why didn\'t he put an imperial eagle there instead?

i am not in the least religious, more to the opposite in fact, but if that cross idea is the truth, i cant for the life of me understand what he was thinking when he came up with it

I agree with what a lot of you guys have said, its a little excessive. Cant at all knock the ability of the painter, the skills are amazing to say the least. But there is just too much, as always less is more.

Take away the banner and the wing freehand and imo this would have been a hundred times better
