Just \'what is\' a cherub ....

I\'ve got a bunch of them, I see them in artwork, and I see them all over the place on CMON, but just what is a cherub?

I know a servitor is a person who is pretty much \'dead\' and robotics and all that crap is doing the work through the body.

What about a cherub? Are they essentially children that are messed with genetically/robotically, anythingically ...

And what the hell are they there for?

Curious.

A Cherub is well basically an angelic or or pure representation of purity. Basically they are a symbol of purity. Inquisitors have robotic ones cause well =I= are pure most of the time and need something to represent that. Basically in some religions Cherubs are guardians and what not, but basically in 40k they are mindless psycic assistants. Hope that helps.

Yea to put it easily their robotic flying little babies that either improve the inquisitors senses or add to his psychic abilities. Im not sure if at once they were alive though, maybe their just made to look like the ones depicted in religous artworks (even though there is a lack of christainity in the 41st century)

On a more historical basis, cherubs weren\'t always depicted as winged babies. In babylonian society (no pun intended ), they where centaur men whith a bull\'s body and eagle wings.

Always trust time to change things .

To get back to your question, GW (and John Blanche most of all) just used classic catholic iconography to depict everything that is closely linked to the Emperor.

Game wise, they can boost your Inquisitors (you\'d need to check the codice to get the details).

Thanks for the replies - for the most part I wasn\'t needing game mechanics as I don\'t play the game but as I \'see\' them in the models and the artwork, I was just wondering if the Inquisitors were right bastards and taking mutant babies or something and screwing them up.

Interesting stuff ... I just keep finding more and more I like.

The cherubs are mostly like servitors - vat-grown and artificially stunted to make them child-like before being cybernetically augmented to give them wings. Not that their wings can support them, of course - they all have suspensor units, similar to those used in servo-skulls, that keep them in the air. The wings are just propulsion and steering.

Then, of course, there are the caryatids. These are actually an alien species, highly sensitive to human psychic emanations and native to Necromunda. What they looked like before humans arrived is unknown, but now they resemble winged human children. They are tolerated as they do not use human resources and do not appear to have any attraction to warp entities. Indeed, they seem to actively repel them to some extent. Rather, caryatids are attracted to power and influence, flocking to aristocrats and lords. A handful can usually be found in the vicinity of the more successful gang leaders and having a caryatid is considered a powerful status symbol on Necromunda.
