Ancient figurines, our ancestors Gods or merely offerings?
In a recent discovery, archaeologists have uncovered a perfectly preserved household shrine to the Gods of early 21st centuary man. The shrine contained thousands of generally 28mm humanoid figures, which may be representations of our ancestors gods. Most of these figures depict warriors armed with swords and primitive projectile weapons, although a few depict beasts, such as horses, fantasical creatures such as Dragons and even primitive land based vehicles. Given the preponderance of warrior figures it is thought that the humans visiting this shrine were warriors seeking aid from their Gods in battle. It has been suggested that the figures might not represent the Gods, but be offerings brought to the priest in return for a blessing. The vast majority of the metal and plastic figures were packed in numerous cardboard boxes. A few were carefully placed in cases lined with foam, it is thought that these may represent particularly important offerings. A tiny minority of the figures had been painted with primitive acrylic paints. These seem to have been central to the religous ceremonies of the time, because they were kept in easily accessible glass cabinets. Quite how these figures were used in ceremony remains a mystery, but some experts argue that they were used to simulate battles, success in these simulated battles would bring the favour of the Gods and victory in the real wars being fought at the time. The debate continues...
