How many great talented singers are there out there today that will never be \'discovered\' because they don\'t look like Britney Spears, or Marilyn Manson, or whichever little package would sell?

You\'d be surprised at how many.
I used to work at a Karaoke bar, and you\'d be surprised how many people can sound just like the stars without any editting.
I used to know a big white guy, about 6\'3\", 250 lbs., kinda goofy looking, but the man could sound exactly like Seal and Prince.(Or the symbol who was formely known as the artist Prince.)

Take my wife for example. (No, really take her lol)
She has a singing range that can go from Natilie Maines of the Dixie Chicks, to Amy Lee from Evanescence, to Madonna, to Natile Merchant, to Kate Pierson of the B-52\'s. She\'s got more pure talent in her little toe than Britney Spears, Jessica Simson, and Christina Agulara put together, but she doesn\'t fit the image.

Although I do have to say Michelle Branch is a tasty little package of talent and looks.

@Oh Evil one - I have to agree with that. On a musical basis, there is truly a derth of talent now. I guess I was talking more about the cultural aspect of it. But most of the groups or performers out there today could do a REALLY \"unplugged\" gig to save their lives. Unfortunately, the opposite is true as well. Many of the talented groups of times past would never make it now simply because they don\'t look right. It hass long been my contention that real music ain\'t pretty :D Proof? Kieth Richard & Janis Joplin would probably head up the list :D Then let\'s add John Entwistle and Peter Townshend, Jimi Hendricks, and the list goes on and on. None fo these would ever make it on a list of \"Lookers\"

My generation in particular (who came of age in the 60\'s and 70\'s) always surprise and disappoint me though. They looked at Marilyn Manson and were shocked - forgetting entirely about Alice Cooper and Kiss. They look at todays youth and declare that they dress stupidly. Have any of you SEEN pictures from the 60\'s and 70\'s You\'d be hard pressed to dress stupider than that. They complain that there\'s way to much emphasis on sex and drugs. Did they completely forget about Woodstock and almost any other excuse to get high and screw? They complain that the kids don\'t respect authority. Who invented the idea of not trusting anyone over 30

Ain\'t that the truth?

I actually think it is virtually impossible NOT to grow old and forget what is was like to be young and hence become hypocritical. I find myself disapproving of youthful behaviour and then catch myself and realise thats exactly what I did when I was a kid. Arrrggh I\'m growing old and becoming my parents!

Marylin Manson wrote a damn book on how to use shock to become a famous rock star...

Right I\'m off to compalin about the noise from the neighbourts stereo... its not loud enough! :D

Whoa , so Jesus said GW doesn\'t like Black People.
If he was so damn special why didn\'t he come help during Katrina, healing the sick and wounded and all.

Games Workshop doesn\'t care about black people?

Games Workshop doesn\'t care about white or any other colored people either. the only people they do like are the green ones found on money...

I saw this cover the other day. Am I the only one that remembers when Rolling Stone was actually about music. If you read the articles, the whole rag comes off as the Uber-chic fashion catalog and sounding board for low-IQ leftist kids.
As for Kanye: I\'m sure Jesus loved slappin Ho\'s and smoking weed. Must be in one of those DaVinci code books I missed.

Thats a seriously good point. I think it is a problem. I was brought up to believe that you EARN respect.
Thanks. Gotta agree with this - respect is earned. Obviously you should get a certain amount of deference straight from the get-go, but that\'s just politeness; after that you\'re on your own merits.

Damn - forgot about the unrealistic expectations of material wealth!

Yeah, good point - you could expect a certain amount of perspective.

lol lol

I think part of the problem here is that theoretical concerns are often different to real concerns - I don\'t have kids of my own but I worry about the influence of some songs, and their videos, on my suggestive nephew and niece (9 going on 12). I really can\'t say that it would bother me as much if that were not in the back of my mind.

Trying to be objective though I really don\'t think this is \'more of the same thing\'. One of the problems with rap is its omnipresence - as far as I know it is the most important and successful new style in popular music ever and it\'s everywhere (which boggles my mind but there you go). I know it\'s in the nature of adults to see youth as not being as good as they were in their day in some respect - but the world today is not the same world of the late 50s and 60s, much of it not to the better, and negative influences sure won\'t help society in the developed world be better in 20 years than it is now.

He\'s a FREAK! This is the new world generation. Nothing is shocking on a Society level any more. Mass Murderers? Seen it. Whole sale death and destuction? Been there done that! Pornography of every type imaginable. Religion every brand, everywhere you look. Abuse, corruption and agendas everywhere you go. Craziness world wide.

Half the world wants to tell the other half how to live and doesn\'t understand why the other half doesn\'t care and doesn\'t want to listen.

It\'s all about attitudes now. Somehow somebody is always trying to take it to that next level.

This isn\'t the older generation not understanding the younger generation. It\'s that nothing is sacred any more. No shock value.

Earlier someone mentioned that his wife had more talent than Christina Aguliera (and co.), but I doubt she had more. Christina Agulira is actually an amazing singer in her earlier songs, but she also happens to be a whore like jessica simpson and brintey spears. Although I agree that Britney has no talent - whatsoever :D

It\'s amazing what an Antares Vocal Producer can do for correcting all of those little mistakes in realtime. :innocent:

How to always have perfect pitch.

Yeah, I really miss the innocence of the spanish inquisition. Or what about the orgies and public executions of the 18th century? Come on....the world is as it always has been.

It varies, definitely, but it\'s all cyclical.
