Kathie's Lil' Cthulhu (Maow miniatures)

Here is my latest attempt at improving my painting techniques. I did not use any black on this model. All of the shading is done with glazes of blue or purple that I mixed up myself (another thing I was trying out). I still haven't reached a comfortable point with the consistency of glazes of how to use them, but I learned a little on this little guy.

I saw this mini online and could not pass it up. He is such a little cutey and Cthulhu is one of Nemissary's favorite things. I painted it up for Nem and I used a custom base that Nem makes and casts himself.

Comments and criticisms needed and encouraged. Don't worry about hurting my feelings, this is here for me to get feedback and learn to be better. :)

Gahaha! Yay Cthulhu ! iyah! iyah!
I think that little bugger looks spot on and looks well painted. My only crit would be to perhaps make the sharp top edge of the spade a little bit shinier to make it appear more sharp. And perhaps the tentacles on the ground could use an extra layer of gloss to make the shine deeper and slimier. It's not that it's looking matte right now but the more you build up the layers with gloss varnish, the more it will look like thick wet shininess, to use a scientific term.

I concur with the rest. The glazes work really well. Top job on such a tiny thing too! Have to admit, i'm partial to the little guy too.

Hi Kathie, nice job :good:

I'm sure if Tagamoda pops up from whichever German board she's posting on at the moment she'd suggest working on your blending, particularly, I think, some of the white around the brow. I think that there's room for more shading on the back of his head, lower half into the neck which currently looks like quite a large expanse of flat green. A bit more work on the back of the shovel to bring out its shape more, though that may just be the photos. Use of gloss is working but at some point having a crack at painting in the effect with reflective white spots & greater contrast in the shading might be nice (and a new challenge). Glazing over the highlight lines on the floortiles too, just to smooth them off to the same standard as the mini itself would be nice, though I've no room to talk when it comes to basing :D Neaten up the paint on the toenails of his left foot too, particularly the middle one.

Perfectly presentable as he is but I think those are my main pointers if you wanted to nudge him up a point for Gallery scoring.

Cheers, B.

Very nice mini, excellent use of glazes, and I like the base very much as well.
