Heya guys I don\'t post here very much, but am a constant lurker. I would really like some help in developing my skills a little further, so I figure this is place to be ;)

Being tired of my usual style I decided to branch out and try something new. So I dug into my box of minis and picked out Kelen.

My thoughts are to make him a very dark looking character, by using muted tones and zenithal lighting. Two things I really need practice on, considering usually I work with ambient light sources and more solid colours.

Here is what I have done so far. You can tell the right arm and left arm are different. I had started on the left arm, but decided this morning to try some contrast shading on the right arm, rather than tonal shading. Which do you think looks more realistic, I am leaning more towrds the right arm myself?

Now I really want your input on this guy, although not much is done so far. I am trying to push past alot of boundaries I had set for myself by being in a painting rut for that last few years, so please feel free to offer any advice and criticisms you have.

Thanks
Ja

His or our right? :]

I think the right (his) arm looks better of the two. It\'s got more natural colours and the more muted look of it will probably work best with a generally dark colour scheme. The other arm looks alright too, but it\'s got colours that are a little too bright, IMO. Looks good, but a bit cartoonish, if you see what I mean.

his right :innocent:

Thanks for the input, I defintely see what you mean, I had been thinking the same myself, but its always good to have others\' opinions.

OOO

WOW,

where are all these awsome minis from?

This guy is cool.

I too agree with above opinion. although if you left them as they are the two diffwrnt styles it look as if the sun is shining on him from his Left IMO this leaves him open for serious basing and convvertion?

But if you want to use one style i would go for the muted look as stated above, especially if he is going to be a dark brooding character!!!

:)

Cheers Iain.

He is a Rackham figure, from the Confrontation range.

Here is a shot with his skin complete. ONe question I have is whenther I should lighten up the left arm, since that will be the direction of the Zenithal light, or if I should darken the right arm, or just leave it alone?

OK

Is the light gonna be shining on the staff arm or the other?

If its on the staff arm you should make it lighter, if the other keep as they are the other arm is shaded just right,

Cheers Iain.

It looks good as it is. As the arms are more or less on the same vertical level (the out-stretched left arm is not decidedly more subjected to the overhead light source than the right arm) I\'d say they would be almost equally highlighted.

Now get to work on that cloak of his! :D

I started the cloak, turned out good so far. I started with green grey, then shaded with middlestone and violet, after which I glazed with middlestone.

I use three lights outside of a photobox, a 100 watt overhead halogen and 2- 40 watt halogens on the sides.

Here is the best shot I could get so far of the back of the cloak. It \'s so frustrating because it looks so much better IRL

looking great so far....like the colours of the cloak....could maybe do with a little more definition (probably best shading) round the fingers but other than that looking forward to the progress.

good luck

So I finished up the bottom cloak this morning. I didn\'t want to stick with the leather all the way so I switched it up for pastel green, which I really like. The question is now what to do with the armor. I was thinking about carrying the green up, and make it lacquered armor, but I am open to suggestions. Btw the green was done by first painting paleblue, then gunship green and finally mahogany sand.

Sorry for the lack of update, had a few shoulder and back problems so couldn\'t get much painting done.

Anyway here is a pic of the cheast piece and feathers started. I will finish off the details of the chest piece and clean up the feather later.

The chest piece was started with deck tan, then shaded with green brown fllowed by burnt umber and finally dark prussian blue. I glazed it over with green brown to blend it all in.

The feathers were painted with pale greyblue, then shaded with field blue, grey green and the glazed with black.
