Khavor's Sculpting WIP: Little Girl w. Big Gun

Okay, this is a couple of firsts for me. Not only am I trying my hand at sculpting my own mini from scratch, I'm also going to do it as a WIP. I usually prefer to just toil away quietly in the background and lurk, but as I've got a lot to learn about using the green stuff I figured I'd put it out here for all to see. My subject is an old character of mine from a sci-fi RPG some friends and I had created. Her name is Nikolya. She's kind of a techie/pilot type. Here's an old picture I'd done:

And here's one I did last week to try and put her in a suit of armor to make the mini more playable:

I really like the face and the entire attitude from the first drawing, but plan to do the armor more similar to the second. I hope I can be a better sculptor than sketch artist. Anyway, I started on her last week and here's where I'm at now:

I'm a bit worried her head is too large, but on the other hand her shoulders are not done yet, and her head being a bit large makes her body seem slimmer by comparison. Overall though I'm fairly happy with the result so far. C&C are definately appreciated.

Hi mate - nice start for sure.
Her head is way to big in my opinion, if you count with hairs/helmet/whatever will cast it even bigger. So far she had proportion more to child than adult female. Always work for me to simply think about 1/8 (head/body) for adult and something like 5/5 for child - it"s not correct actually, but works fine for miniatures at least.
Also, davefromwy mentioned Andrew Loomis in his thread already - wich is probably most useful reference/research in simply human anatomy (got some pdfs of his books on my hard drive, so pm me in case of interest).
Anyway - nice job so far - keep going mate and good luck with your sculpting way

Thanks a lot for the kind words guys. I didn't do much last night. Just finished up the pistol in the holster to prep for the arm, and sat and meditated on the head situation. In the end I have to say thanks Phaty for telling me what I knew deep down: I've got to redo her head. When you hold her next to another 28mm mini it's obvious, and like you pointed out I still have to do hair, goggles, etc. So tonight I guess I'll be doing addition by subtraction.

Crap, I really liked that face.

Okay, back on track now hopefully. I decapitated her and sculpted a new head. It took a few tries to get it right again, but seems to work better. This time I won't add the ears or round the head up until I do her hair. One less layer hopefully = better luck keeping it small. Also did her left arm this morning and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

Still have to address her feet and boots. They were the first parts I sculpted. I foolishly deviated from my armor sketch and did boots similar to the first drawing, not realizing this would screw up the knee pads as well. So, lesson learned, now they're too big and will have to be shaved down and redone.

the new head is looking good. The neck looks like it could be bulk up a bit. so far so good. keep it up.

Okay, I've done a fair amount of work on Nikolya the last couple of days. I shortened and then smoothed out the neck, and added a collar, and added the right arm. I've also pretty well decided to completely redesign the gun, making it smaller, and probably kind of melta-ish (with modifications) for all the guard players out there. Still working on a hair style as well. Probably either goggles and two little pony tail type knots, or a beaten up straw cowboy hat.

It's going nicely so far. Head is better - will probably end up still a bit big with hairs and stuff .... but no need to redo it again I guess. Keep going mate and get her finished :) :good:

I found time to do a fair amount of work on her this week, so time for another update. Shoulder pads, knee pads, and hair / goggles are all done now. Boots have been redone (although still not quite finished). I'm picking up a bit of momentum now as she's starting to look like something...

Minor update from my little project. I want on vacation for a week and didn't do anything, plus got sick, so progress has been slow. Since I got back I've worked almost exclusively on her gun, and it's mostly finished now.

Much smaller than the original concept of a big rotary cannon, but I like this look (thanks to Flashheart for the suggestion over on the Troll Forged forums). Still a big gun compared to her body size. GW melta gun is laying behind her in the first pic. It's ginormous! Would look like a heavy weapon in her hands. I included the second pic to show her a bit more in scale next to some other minis.

i think a good decision there mate looking cool, remember the noisey cricket, apparently size is unimportant or so the wife says lol.

I think I'm about ready to call her done. I've done her elbow pads, the bands on the back of her calves, the soles of her boots, finished up her gun, added more hairs sticking out the back of hair knots, tidied up some rough spots, and made a big honking sword to go on her back. The sword is just stuck on with poster tack (the yellow in the pic). I figured it could be cast separate and left off if so desired.

I tried to do some small straps hanging out the edges of the goggles, but it seemed too similar to the hair coming off her temples in almost exactly the same spot. I also debated doing some belt pouches / grenades / bullets on her belt, but decided it would probably fatten her waist too much and make her look less feminine. Finally, here's a shot with a space marine to show scale:

So, anyone have any gripes or suggestions? Final thoughts?
