I had a pretty frustrating painting weekend. I've been fighting with the warrior's NMM sword to the point where I actually stripped the sword since there were so many layers of fail. I also worked on the firefighter's skin some more and added a little red to the skin, not sure if I should add more or stop. The face will have some soot and grim.. and I added the eye brows.. Comments welcomed! Thanks.

Its coming along really well Khon. Also be thankful for the frustration of this past weekend because from what I heard you are getting some great NMM practice under your belt and going to be all the much better for it.

Thanks all.. Blood - I figured that the bottom edge of the sword would be in shadow, that's why I stuck with the darker blue-grey. I can darken the part near the hilt, I understand that, and fix the strong highlight where the 2 edges meet, but do I need to add some light to the bottom edge even though I think it's in shadow? Are you suggesting that I reverse the bottom edge, so it's lightest at the hilt and darkest at the tip? (basically the inverse of the top edge)

Hi hope I'm not too late here. BaM is correct in his statements. Let me add that just because you want the bottom part of the blade in shadow doesn't mean you can't lighten it a bit in places. So your highlight on the bottom shadowy part is actually your midtone on the lighter upper part. Or you don't even have to go that light on the bottom of you don't want. You could start with pure black at the tip and the closer you get to the hilt, the lighter it gets, but not too light. It may only be a tad lighter than pure black, but it should be enough for the naked eye to pick it up. You need it to be lighter than the upper half of the blade here at the hilt, because the upper part is at its darkest here, so therefore the bottom should be light enough so that when you are looking at the sword as a whole you see the contrast between both sides of the sword.

Owww nice work K, I see the chin is very light relative to the checks. Making the checks and nose this light would be benificial. Looking Dam good mate.

I really like the spots you put into the cloak. That is some amazing detail work bud. The shield I already loved. The hair though is throwing me off though. I love the color choice but maybe needs some smoother transitioning? I dont know. Its all a hell of a lot better than I can do :p.

Hello khonner! Waiting for your minis from the ME impatiently!!
Meanwhile I have done a little image to help you with the sword, I have only painted 3 swords in this way (I painted them plain metallic, before) but I think that is what BAM and bloodfahter where trying to explain you is this (hope this helps you out!) :

Hoping you get the idea, you will find thousands of better examples here at cmon gallery and on the internet, I have done it fast and in your picture for you to see it "live" ;)

Yep, that absolutely right. Your most recent version is the best because you have black to white contrast, but Maenas draws it up just like I described. I drew a pic to help explain before I saw Maenas' photo, but I'll include it anyway because it may help:

There re are other ways to do it, but this is the easiest and maybe even the best way in this instance. They key is to have white right next to black, as you can see at the tip and the base.

bingo....that's the greatest disply of a computer example I've seen..keep it simple so you get the hang of it keep it to a midtone covering the whole blade like you've done and a shade and a highlight after that you can push the shades down to black and the highlights further to white...but from here it Def looks like you have the idea try to mimic that computer image.it's a great example from maenus.a d BFOK HAS ANOTHER GREAT EXAMPLE AS WELL.

the fireman skin tones are looking really good to me, the sword i feel needs more contrast, the light and darks need to be more extreme

good work though, keep at it.
