Khorne Lord of Skulls - Defiler style conversion WIP

Hi all, I saw this image on a blog at Spikey Bits some time ago and was instantly inspired

I like the upright "not Titan" version too, but something about this design just made me want to have a go!

These are early shots of the main chassis, 3 layers of foam card, the middle layer recessed to take a bicycle brake
cable liner. I've added some shaped areas of foam along the middle to break up the shape a bit and also to take up
the height difference between the outside hydraulics and the upright pistons.

I've used the spine and 2 tanks from the kit to provide a power source and the bottom half of a Defiler chassis has
been chopped for the start of detailing at the back end.

6 x 30mm polystyrene balls cut to sit over the square block complete the main chassis build. I've made a start on some
detail pipe work but plenty more to add on before I start the legs.

Hopefully some more progress tomorrow and early next week!

Cheers,

thanks gohkm, much appreciated - with over 350 views and no comments I was beginning to think I'd just created a mess and nobody had the heart to tell me!!

I have one that I put together as per instructions and then thought it looked a little 'off' and maybe even a little small compared to what I was expecting. You have done a beautiful job of making this model better. The legs will size it up some and also make it fit in better with the theme of most of the Daemon Engines (Legs and not tracks for ost all of them). I can't stress enough that you are doing great work here! I may have to disassemble mine (If it can be done) and do something similar. The idea is awesome enough to steal, that's for sure. :)

Don't get discouraged about the lack of comments. I can't seem to get any feedback on a few different forums I post on and then very little on a few others. People like to click and look at eye-candy and then don't bother with and comments or criticism. I just made a new account for this forum this week to see if the famed Coolminiornot forums (that is full of experts and pros) could give me some guidance or critiques and I have gotten zip-zero-nada! lol :p Oh well, guess it should just be chalked up to human laziness.

I will be following this topic and maybe storing away some of your ideas in my feeble brain. Thanks for sharing the project.

I've just checked KHTHOTH and can't see anything in your gallery and a week isn't really long.

This looks really good. I can't wait to see the final version. Have you decided on a colour scheme yet?

cheers Jester - I've got a Heldrake/Maulerfiend I've converted into a "Dragon" looking beastie and I'm experimenting with that - working with a deep brown up to a red on the panel areas at the moment and then it's going to be the metallics........ can't decide on going from a black undercoat or a deep brass yet...........

I based this on a sketch from the web so stealing inspiration is deffo the way to go!! i think with most conversions it's just taking the deep breath to start changing things - other than the parts I'm making this is actually quite a straight forward conversion as there is no cutting of major parts to fit different kits together. I'll try and get some closer shots of the chassis and the legs to give people a better idea of how they have gone together - the main chassis is 3 pieces of foam board sandwiched together like a very squat capital I - then brake cable cut and put into the recess so it's not just flat, and give it a more mechanical look............... then it was a case of going through a plastic tube supply sheet and working out what sizes would fit into each other without the need for too much filler work - I can take some micrometer measurements for the diameter of the tubes if you like? The balsa wood is drilled at the ends so around 5mm of tube goes into the wood for extra joint strength - the legs don't support any weight but still need to be fairly resiliant!!
