King Maulg - Paintalong 2015

Thank you guys!

So I have continued Maulg over today, I have define the skin a bit more and got a quite unexpected problem. It never happened before, I mix some different greens and purple. Then I apply the paint to some areas, everything was fine, it starts to dry and like a magical trick, all the lighter color pigments appeared making huge aureoles and chalky marks. It was a dark color mix with some lighter one... I had chalky effect when I started painting few years ago while putting a too light color on some dark area, but here it was something different. But the result was similar and even worse...
I had to change all the paint, throw my wet palette and start over, I believe that paint was "too old" it was 2 days on the wet palette and the pigments got bad...

Anyway here the result, the back side needs some more definition, I have added a tattoo, I could not resist, this is the character for "Jin" in Chinese meaning gold, but can be pronounced "King"

And I also started the base:

Now I am not sure that I can finish before leaving for business trip and end of the year holidays... I will try but let's see... So if you don't get any update until next year you will know why!

Somehow I have managed to get 5 miniatures on my desk all with a deadline of 2-6 weeks! Anyhow, here's my blue guy, I'm adding some warm colour to the shadows as he's all cold. Not sure if I should attempt NMM on his arm and backpack, I've never done it before but I think the cartoony look of NMM will work.View attachment 44214

He look like he needs blanket! Lol. The germs on his left arm look good. Effective modification.

View attachment 44377 so I've tried adding a little warmth to steam Maulg , with some pink and purples , especially into the shadows. Also, as I got the new Scale75 copper/brass set of paints I've gone with a TMM on the arm and backpack. Just need to tidy the face next.

Oops, forgot to add my latest on Maulg here. Sorry.

hmr, your blue is looking great: I love the TMM arm, the warmth really works against the blue. I assume you're still working on the skin (a bit more shadowing in the face will really help lift it), but so far it's looking awesome. And very different.

Krule, I love the bottles, and the starfish on the anchor. Some really nice details on this version of Maulgy (the boots are a nice touch too). Are you going to do stripy trousers? :) And do you know what you're doing with the base yet?

Yet another different take on him. I like seeing the wide range of styles and imagination: great work everyone!

Here's my (somewhat more 'traditional' green skin/brown loincloth) version of Maulg so far:

I had a go at the axe head. Don't think I like it; but I'm struggling to mix freehand with metallics...

Lol. The pirate version is as is...the only mods I have made was fixing the anchor I broke in half. I have three ideas bouncing in my head for the base, but haven't had my thoughts coalesce yet. I definately want to try stripes on the plans, but not sure of the color. Possibly the same red color of the hat or a cream color.

btw: I like the axe head.

Quick update from me: tried to fix the axe. It's now a grimy, well-used thing. BaM would be proud!

i've shaded the knot in purple to give it some depth and dimension. Does this work, folks?

Also done a different design on the reverse: because I couldn't face doing that Celtic knot again. Hopefully that would be acceptable...

These are all coming along so well. I'm loving Boubis metals and all of bgcdazzlers free hand details are incredible.
KruleBear you may think you're making slow progress but compared to mine you are practically sprinting.
I've made a bit more progress. I think I may need to increase the contrast a bit but I'll tinker with that when all of the skin is done.

I just had the most ridiculous idea for my Maulg base. I won't say what it is in case it goes horribly wrong, but it's going to involve at least six things I haven't tried before. Ah well: in for a penny, in for a pound...

Watch this space for cockups aplenty- in the meantime here it is with glue drying:

Here it is with Maulgy for scale (he's not glued down, obviously):

wish me luck!

Boardandy I agree wtih you to have more contrast, start by working more in the shadows I think that part will help the most.

Well it's been a while but now that Christmas is behind us I've managed to squeeze in a little painting time. Still working my way thorough his skin but getting there slowly.

Is anyone else still painting Maug as this thread seems to have died.

Slow and steady wins the race!

must admit I completely forgot to put updates to Maulgy here as well as on my WIP. I should be able to post up an update tonight.

Your skin is looking great, Andy.

Right, a bunch of details were missed on this one (I put them all in my WIP but not here: sorry about that everyone). The upshot of it all is... I'm finished! It became more of a diorama than a straight figure painting thing, but here he is anyway. Hope you like him!
