converted model using genuine Games Workshop models and parts, Forgefiend/Maulerfiend main body and head and wings from the Heldrake, additional mech-tentacle from Maulerfiend kit plus greenstuff.

I've painted this one to a good gaming standard, the red panels are a lacquer effect over metallic, giving it a really nice deep appearance. This is mainly designed to be fielded as a stand out Heldrake, but can just as easily be fielded as a Maulerfiend still!

thanks, the response on other forums and facebook was very encouraging too, I usually go several notches up for display painted minis so the gamer level
was a bit of an experiment, converting the GW plastics is loads of fun, so many interchangeable kit parts often with little adapting.

Getting the tip on mixing a little hand cream with the greenstuff was a winner too, never used to get on with it and couldn't understand the fuss LOL

Made a "couns as" Forgefiend with the left overs and a set of legs from a bitz seller :-D

thanks again, I've been into GW since they were 1 shop in London in 1977 and other than a few late teenage years drifting off for beer and women it's been a steady hobby!

I'va always liked adapting and altering, with the plastics it's so much easier, the paintwork on this is gaming standard rather than the full finish I usually go for, I'm kitbashing some Dark Mechanicus and will get them up on a thread shortly too - really pleased with how they are turning out, very John Blanche feel, hope I can do the paint justice!

You say that the red on the above pic is a lacquer effect over red paint. Is that a lacquer paint? Like the type used on model cars and such? Testors is who I think I'm talking about. Anyway, I like the look. Just don't know how or what Id apply it to. Do you find yourself shopping for conversion parts at those bits stores, or do you just own that much GW product?

I like talking to those that have been in the Game for so long. Can't imagine what it would be like learning all this painting stuff on my own. I read like 20 tutorials a day, even if I already have the topic in question mastered, just so I can get a new perspective. But in the early days it must have been all trial and error. It amazes me that there are some pioneering techniques discovered and used for the first time and posted on CMON. Like SENMM for instance. This stuff is less than 10 years old. So to say that we are still experiencing the beginning of this Craft is an understatement. Historical modellers and railroaders are light years ahead if us. One just has to look at the weathering on a tank to see how advanced that hobby is.

But i digress. Do you ever sculpt things from scratch?

the laquer effect on this one is Tamiya Clear Red, nice strong color but shows through what's underneath it too - you can get some interesting effects using
different base colors but I love it over metallic paints.

the internet has made the largest changes to this hobby, online tutorials and vids are fantastic, but yes to start with it was all experimentation and trying to
coax info out of a few people at WW2 shows.............. and a lot of trial and error!!

I own very few models, I tend to buy stuff to build and paint then sell that to buy the next, keeps the hobby rolling as I don't game with them and would
soon run out of space if I kept them, so this approach works well for me :glasses-cool:

the parts left over from the Heldrake and Maulerfiend used for the dragon went into building this - with another set of legs from a bits store - love bits stores!!

other small parts are getting used up for pincers on the Dark Mechanicus and as I also love anime I've used some of the armor to make a set of shoulder pads along the lines of Sleipnir The Runemasquer

View attachment 27192 I'm going for the John Blanche look of snaking prosthetics, still an experimental WIP at the moment but it's heading in the right direction......

available from Fenris Games in the UK these were all sculpted using Super Sculpey, marbles, bits of wire, MDF and quite likely one foot in the mouth of madness :laugh::bulgy-eyes::bulgy-eyes: I just picked up some offcuts of thin MDF and started cutting weird basic shapes then went at it with the sculpey, no plan or anything - these were done around 2 years back and I've not done anything since other than scenic bases for my own stuff. Not had any inspiration in that department and I'm very much a "go with the flow" guy...........

Hope there is something vaguely of help in those ramblings LOL

Yes, definitely helpful. If you read my WIP on here, you will definitely know what rambling is.

Wow, impressed by those scenic sculpts. It's amazing to me the talent hidden on the website. You never know how any people get commissioned or hired out to do projects. But it's never like work for them because we all enjoy the hobby so much.

That first pic of the beast you made from leftovers of the hell drake and mauler is just incredible. Very scary!

Ah, Tamiya Clear Red. GW made their own version, called it Blood for the Blood God. I love the stuff but never thought of an application outside of blood. I'm looking forward to seeing some more of your stuff. It provides a lot of inspiration.
