Koarlap Bloodcraver

Since I have been taking frequent WIP shots lately to see how my projects are looking better, why not post here and get some feedback as well :)

This is Reaper\'s Koarlap Bloodhand, converted and renamed Koarlap Bloodcraver for his propensity for drinking the blood of powerful foes to gain their power. I cut off the original axe and gave him a blood chalice from a GW figure (yes it is big but I think it fits the theme). His other hand was empty so I gave him an axe from a GW dwarf sprue. The base will be a snow base, with the severed head resting there, lifeblood draining into the snow while Koarlap raises his chalice high, calling upon his gods to favor him for his battle prowess and victory.

This miniature had the worst mold lines I have encountered for quite some time, and the face is not very well sculpted, hopefully he will still come out well.

Woa! Nice concept there, he looks very cool. The conversion is flawless :wow: Look forward to seeing this one finished

Thanks for the encouragement guys - I wasn\'t 100% sure about the actual conversion, but he has grown on me. I took some pics to see how his chalice came out, so thought I would post one to show he is actually being painted :)

The chalice itself (saving the blood for last) is the only thing done (I am such a sloppy basecoater...) and was done with a base of black metallic then a Reaper copper, washed brown, then copper again, then layered up with a couple additions of GW burnished gold, then one layer with pearl white added, then 2 smoke glazes and one more highlight with that final highlight layer. I think I might need one more glaze to bring out a bit more depth to the handle area. I think overall it came out looking like an old beaten copper chalice though, the kind of thing a barbarian would have...

Man how do you sleep at night with that imagination. Still the concept is great. I love making back stories for all my characters. It helps to get a feel for em when your painting or converting. Nice Idea I know you\'ll do a good job so Im gunna look in from time to time.

btw never thanked you for the dripping blood tip. I will have to drop a pic when I get back home. Good luck.

Great Barbarianish concept!

Just imagine facing that guy after he has had his drink...blood dripping down his face, manaical look in his eyes....scary!

After a little more than a year away from the brushes, I finally got back to the painting table today. Not alot was done, but I did get the bracers on Koarlap done. I was recently contacted by a client who wants me to do the Avatars of War barbarian for him since it is based off a Conan cover, so I need to get back at it to be able to do justice to that piece! I am hoping to get this guy done in the next couple of weeks - so look for more from the returned barbarian king!

Got a little more done - not sure what to call it, but the metal part at his waist is done. On to the boots, belt and pouch next.

Girdle - that\'s it; I was going nuts trying to remember that. Thanks!

I got his boots done tonight, although I may need to do more highlights on the fur on them. They were fine until I glazed them - must have overdone it or didn\'t get the glaze thin enough. Oh well, just glad to be back at it!

Glad to hear you\'re back at it! Wondered where you had gone. Looks like this one is well on the way to \"Barbaric Splendor\".

Well not sure about \"barbaric splendor at this point - I am not quite getting things right. I glazed the fur on the cloak way too much and have to go back and re-highlight it now.

EDIT: New picture with redone cloak.

Got the loincloth done, as well as the axe. I used a dark blue basecolor instead of gray like the fur cloak, but I built up highlights with the same colors to tie the two together. The axe I used some Reaper Gun Metal on, and it has a slight bluish tint to it as well.

Got the head on the base done - didn\'t spend alot of time on the skin because it will have snow and gore on parts of it.

Posting this one after doing the eyes and mouth and re-basecoating the skin, to see how the face looks before doing the skin and hair.

I spent this evening doing the skintones, but I need to glaze them over at least once and maybe hit some highlights once more. This will be the last WIP, I will give him nipples and eyebrows and do his hair tonight and try to finish the blood and base tomorrow! I really enjoyed working on this guy.

I thought I was done posting WIPs on this guy, but now I am not sure if I should put blood on the axe blade or not. I think it might be a bit much, but if he has a severed head it also seems there should be blood on the axe blade. Not alot of it, but if you have an opinion on this let me know :)
