A friend of mine sent a forum conversation to me where a WOW player was putting down miniature gaming because it was…

…wait for it…

“too obsessive and time consuming”.

Even 500 point 40K games took too long.

WTF? ???

Doesn\'t WOW mean World of Warcraft?

That\'s the only WoW I know. It\'s possible the guy was the 1 in a million players who isn\'t over doing it on WoW. I just logged off myself! Just checking the forums before bed.

The weird thing is it takes alot longer just to level your character to 70 than it would to trim, clean, assemble, and paint an army.

It\'s interesting how people view things. When you can see their disdain or prejudice for something or their appreciation for something else so clearly swaying their opinion. Making what they do or say seem rediculous. If I was a psych major I\'d be all into that sort of thing.

I\'ve not played WoW, but if it\'s anything like Diablo II, then it\'ll take way more time to play the game. Sure, you can save the game and play it in small stints; but overall it takes a long time to level up (unless like in DII you can get people to power level you but then that isn\'t playing the game). Now, I\'m a slow painter but I could paint an army reasonably quickly if I were to do just the basecoat and a bit of highlighting, and a game of 40k for a 1500 pt army takes about 2 hours without rushing, and having a chat whilst you play.

Jesus, that\'s going to take some beating. Do they even know what the norm for WOW players is??

at least with wargaming you have something to show at the end of it, and you can actually meet people face to face, but then he\'s maybe been playing that long his fingers have swollen so much he cant grip a brush or dice

Is that hypocrisy, or irony?

Either way, it cracks me up.

For a standard trooper, I\'ll put in 2-4 hours on my own stuff.
Easily twice that (and more) on commissions.

But when I\'m done, I\'ve got models I\'m pleased with (most of the time), and
the anticipation of hundreds of games played with them in the coming years.

I\'ll take that over \'I\'ve got a level 90 hunter\', or whatever.

I dunno.

I know plenty of people who play WoW in small doses of 2-3 per week and enjoy it just fine. It all depends on what you want out of the game, whether you are a \'casual\' or a \'raider\'.

By the same token, it depends on if you\'re happy with a figure that you\'ve painted in 2 hours or not.

I would think it would take a lot longer to paint a large army than it would to level to 70, but that\'s based on my personal abilities and quirks.

*edit* It somewhat surprises me that WoW has this reputation of being a time consumer...it\'s so casual friendly it\'s silly. You want a time sink, go play the original EQ...THAT was a life drainer. If you didn\'t dedicate hours every day to that game you weren\'t getting anywhere.

Thanks for reminding me, darth. EQ took up roughly 5 years of my life, with a smattering of \"breaks\" thrown in there for good measure.

After about 8 months playin\' WoW, I got bored with it. You\'re doin\' the same thing over and over. Granted, it\'s in a different zone, and you\'re killing different mobs, but it\'s still a repeat of what you\'ve been doin\' since Level 1.

WoW is a time sink, because you invest time, but have nothing tangible to show for it. But this delusional WoWer is right in one respect. Mini painting IS time consuming, and most of us obsess about it. Too bad he doesn\'t realize that his vice is just as bad, if not more so.

Yeah, but that\'s pretty much any hobby, isn\'t it?

\'Granted, it\'s a different company, and a different sculpt, but you\'re still laying paint on a tiny metal person\'... ;)

I can see the argument of having something tangible when you\'re done, but that\'s been a knock against video games since day one...I can remember my dad being grumpy at me playing video games at the bowling alley because I didn\'t \'have anything to show for it\' when I was done.
