I'm going to preface this by saying that my post is intended to be constructive rather than antagonistic. There are other models in your gallery that I really like and haven't hesitated in giving full marks. This wasn't one of them though. As have voiced trouble understanding how it could be voted less than a 10 so I should probably justify why I gave it an 8!
I appreciate there is an amazing amount of painting skill and ability on show here in the freehand detailing and smooth finish of the model. It's mind blowing stuff at a level that I know I will never be able to reach, but despite that skill being so evident I don't like how the model looks.
I feel that the finesse of the painting technique is contrasted by a lack of restraint and understanding of flow and form through the freehand. It makes an end result that isn't aesthetically pleasing or harmonious to my eyes. This comes through in the mis-matched freehand designs more than anything else which are too powerful and draw away from the final look, making it too busy. I quite like the design at the bottom, as it somewhat mimics the sea, but throw in the checquerboard, the sprouting type stems, the scaled/feathered back and it's too much fighting for attention.
The painting on the rocks of the base is not as well rendered as the girl either, and the water doesn't look as wet as it could. It is as though there is a line drawn from under the feet of the model and the painting style and feel above and below that is totally different.
So, that is why I wasn't as wowed by it as most people seem to be. The technical skill is an 11, but the look of the finished piece just doesn't appeal to me.
But others love it, so all is well!
