Lamps in UK

I know this has been asked for a zillion times, but I need to get me a new lamp for painting, and I\'m in a desperate need of advise! The thing is, I am looking for a lamp that is safest for the eyes. What kind of lamps do you guys use?

And my second question is, where do you think I can find such lamps in London or at any UK online store?

I got this one after being recommended it by Orb, its fantastic, if you like it tell the guy to rap it safely though as my bulb was smashed on delivery. He did however send a replacent free of charge :D

Margo there is a lot of hobby/craft shops in london where you can pick up decent hobby lamps, not sure of there location exactly but if you can get hold of a copy of yellow pages (commercial business telephone directory) it will list a few or you can go alone to a supermarket like Tesco or Asda and buy a desc lamp and fit it with a day light balanced lamp.

Depending on where abouts in London you are there are a few stores called HobbyCraft dotted around the out skirts they will do hobby lamps.

I would say ask Shaz (Fizl) but she has just left the country again I think and I have\'t seen Tammy on here for a while, other than that I\'m affraid I can\'t be much more helpful :D

Margo, at the end of the day it depends on how much you want to pay :D I presume you clicked on the where to buy button and looked at the list of London Stores if not I\'ve done it for you http://uk.daylightcompany.com/stockists2.plm?region=1#London scroll down or click for London :) they mention 2 locations for Hobbycraft but I imagine the other places will be similar and stock a very good selection of lamps including the one mentioned by Mark, I think your best bey would be to go along and see for yourself what they have and what takes your fancy :D

I\'m just me not an expert :D

any of those already mentioned are great chioces margo.

make shure you get full spectrum bulbs.
they are desighned to act like sunlight and therefore your eyes won\'t tire as much. i can do a 15 hour day now at my painting desk thanks to the full spectrum lights. (i should have stayed as a postman lol )

As an aquariast I can assure you \"full spectrum\" actually means nothing (not trying to be disagreeable - just warning against marketing tools employed by some companies).
Full spectrumm means it has light in the red/blue/yellow bands, but it does not specify how much of each is present. So you can get a full spectrum light which is very red as the other two wave lengths are drowned out.

What you want is \"true daylight\" tubes. These have the same balance as sunlight (basically). Thats about 5500 kelvin (depending on what kelvin scale is being used! )

Try and find a Maplins shop. It\'s a chain of electrical shops in the UK. They sell a brilliant 22W \"hobbyist\" lamp. It comes with a clamp to fix it to desks etc. They have a circular daylight bulb that casts very few shadows and is really quite bright. They also have a built in magnifying glass in the centre of the bulb. I git one last week and it\'s the best buy I\'ve made in ages, I\'ll be painting all winter now:beer:

£29.99, replacement bulbs are circa £7-8.

Another quick note, do you intend to use it in London only? If not you may want to check if the type of bulb is also available in Moscow (or take along some spare ones).

Bye, Ming-Hua

Thanks a LOT for advise, guys! I\'ll check out the stores you mentioned and I\'m sure I\'ll find something I like!

Ming-Hua, yes, I intend to use it in London only (and I have WAY too much luggage), so buying it in London seems like the only opportunity for me now.

Margo,
I\'ve had one of these for over a year now, (still original bulb/lamp/tube), I wouldn\'t go back to anything else.
Also he\'ll be at Euromilitaire in Folkstone, same weekend as G/Day, but it\'s Sat & Sun. Worth the extra trip tho

Well, I thought I saw an Actulite in Kroms photo............:D

I\'ve had my Aculite for 3 years now........still going strong on the same bulb.........It is very good on the eyes; I genuinely believe in their polarisation filter.

When I bought the acculite, I was able to try one before buying. One of the acculite guys goes to loads of model shows, and hands out demo lights (not give \'em away tho) to anyone doing painting demonstrations etc. And I thought they were really good.
