Lava Lizard for Dragonblood Minis

hey CMON...

this is the third mini i\'ve painted for Dragonblood, and it\'s a wonderful little resin sculpt...

i think this is the first lizard i\'ve ever painted...

first the link, and the pics, and then i\'ll talk a little about the painting on this guy...

o.k., so...
i was told to paint this guy to look like the phoenix that i painted with the Priestess mini...
this meant a nice bright, hot, fire scheme...

this is the first time that i\'ve undercoated a mini white in years...
i can\'t even remember the last mini that didn\'t start from black...
this is also a pure reverse of how we normally paint minis...
the deepest parts of the lizard are white hot, and the highest edges are darkest...
quite a sudden switch in style...

i\'m not a big fan of workin\' with yellow and orange, but the P3 paints cover so well, it was a breeze...
of course i almost went crazy painting each individual scale, but it was well worth it in the end...
a quick drybrush would have looked way too shabby...

the rocks that he\'s climbin\' onto were my first little experiment with the GW washes...
they are based with P3 Trollblood Highlight ( a funky mid-grey), and then washed with green and purple in splotches...
first hit in spots with the purple, and then slathered in green...
then i hit it with a little light from the lava (my second OSL attempt), and BAM...

Cool...er I mean HOT mini!

My only suggestion (and tis a small one) is that maybe the yellow around his belly could have blended into a white....Like white hot type of thing.

Still, it\'s a very striking miniature!

i\'m glad the \"hot\" feel turned out right...
there were a few major hickups along the way...

the photos and background were done by Eric, at Dragonblood...
his pics of the lizard turned out quite nice...

@vikey: the white hot doesn\'t show up as well as i\'d hoped, but the cracks between the belly scales are all pure white...

off to paint more scales!!!

HOT! very neat mini, with a solid paintjob. the eye color choice is a bit unorthodox, but is actually one of my favorite parts. i do think, though, that the belly scales could\'ve used a bit more contrast in some areas (more touches of orange, like on the head). the lava came out very realistic looking. all in all, it looks like they picked the right person for the job.
