Notice: This thread discusses the book Legion so if you do not want anything spoiled please read no further!

I just finished this book and this is what I got out of it. The Alpha Legion joined chaos because the Cabal told them that it would be the best way to save the universe. Is this what everyone else gathered out of it? Seems strange that they would join chaos to help kill the Emperor in an effort to quickly diminish the reign of chaos as a service to the Emperor.

sounds about right to me...
it is some twisted logic, but i think that is the point...
maybe it makes the Alpha Legion one of the more tragic pawns of chaos, maybe it\'s just an excuse 10,000 years later...

it was a good read, for me...
the different guard culture that was introduced was very cool, and the image of a small squad of special ops space marines makes for some good modeling ideas...

cheers

yeah pretty much, and that John guy was working for them trying to find Alpharius? definetly one of the better books in my opinion, up there with the first two

Do you think that the cabal was currupted by chaos or actually thought that killing the emperor was the right thing to do?

Also do you think that if the legion had met with the cabal before Horus became warmaster it would have changed the legions responsibility?

nah, they were just made up of races with the veiw
\"A bloody purge of all humanity for the loss of evil? Sure!\"
Proabaly not, as Alpharius was found last, he didnt seem blinded by doing the \"right thing as long as the Emperor says its right\" more doing simply \"the right thing\"

Finished reading it last night.
As I understood it they sided with Horus because his victory would bring a quick end to Chaos in the universe and since there was no perceptible way for humanity to survive anyway that was the closest thing to the Emperors utopian dreams they could manage to get. A universe without Chaos, at the cost of the death of one race instead of the end of existence.

I read it a while back. I still need to finish Tales of Heresy and Fallen Angels. I like to get two or three of the novels together an dread them back to back.

I love the book and the ending was a great twist, but we are forgetting one thing. The Alpha Legion are notorious for deception. I think this is an example of the teacher educating the student.
Wasn\'t it in Fulgrim that Eldrad Ulthran was shocked because humans were dabbling in the warp and didn\'t know what it was or what lived there? So, who knows how much truth is in what the Alpha Legion was told.

i assumed that they wanted the alpha legion to help detroy the emperor becuase then humanity would be lost, fall into civil war and kill each other out meaning less living things that could be corrupted

you have it more or less spot on the cabal\'s vision of the future shown to alpharus and omegon though had been changed/corrupted by the warp deamons to further the purpose of chaos, the whole horus heresy is a \"warp set up\" from the start:twisted:. hopefully it will give the alpha legion an out at some time where they might return to the fold so to speak you never can tell with 40k

I couldn\'t help but wonder if this Cabal thing was actually a chaos plot. The one thing that could really draw the Alpha Legion into Chaos would be an overly complicated secret plot that played on their particular quirk. If it was honor that pulled Horus in, perfection for Fulgrim, and magic for Magnus, it would make sense that Chaos would use secrets to get to Alpharius.

I thought that Magnus was brought to chaos because it was either join Horus and chaos or have his legion hunted and destroyed for dabbling in magic after the emperor told him not to.

night lord spoiler!!

i thought that they didn\'t truly join chaos, just leave the emperor. they werent pulled, they were pushed!!

also, weren\'t the night lords simply defectors too before they joined chaos?

*spoiler*
in the book \'nigh lord\' a champ has been left in stasis since the heresy and wakes up. start terrorising people and calls for his homies. when they come, he see the twisted version of what they are and is sickened

What I gathered from Legion is that you can never really guage what side the Alpha Legion are on.

But their logic is that with the Emperor around then Chaos will continue but if Chaos beat the Emperor then somewhere in their logic they will be able to beat Chaos for good.

As for magnus and curze I think they were pushed into siding with Chaos, ie Magnus with his sorcery, he used it to warn the Emperor and then Horus sent the Space Wolves to destroy Prospero on the pretence it was the Emperors will.

Same with Curze the Ultramarines were sent to deal with Curze because of his actions.

But I like the idea of Chaos manipulating certain aspects of the Primarchs the cabal with Horus, Fulgrim and perfection. But it always seems the primarch realises too late, fulgrim and ferrus, Horus after he has torn the Emperor apart :p

Good books though cant wait for the next in the series

Actually, I always saw two parts in the corruption of the Primarchs. The first part was the lure and acceptance of Chaos, the second was the betrayal of the Emperor. Sometimes they happened at the same time, but with Magnus, Curze, Mortarion(?) and a few others, there was an interval. You might argue that the dabbling in magic against the Emperor\'s will was a sign that Magnus had already crossed the line, and that his refusal to stand down was when he did his betrayal.

Of course, if there was such a clean-cut right and wrong in 40K, we probably wouldn\'t enjoy the setting so much.

I do not remember this from the book Fulgrim but was the eldar that tried to warn Fulgrim part of the cabal?
