Legolas: First mini to post

I have been painting for two months. So far it has been various reaper characters, and Lord of the Rings characters. This Legolas is the first one I thought was pretty good, the guys as the local gaming place were pretty impressed, too. Then I took a picture of it and saw the multiple flaws, poor transitions, and plane mess ups. But here it is anyway. My first mini on cmon. Practice, Practice, Practice! I am improving, but I can't even conceive how some of you guys do what you do with paint and brush.

That's really pretty good considering how new you are at it.

I think you could stand to thin your paint more. Apply more layers. It'll take a bit longer, but you'll get a smooth result.

The next thing I'd suggest is to push up the contrast, especially on the face. A darker toned wash will help define that face and make his features more prominent.

I think you are off to a wonderful start.

Keep painting, and keep posting, there are some amazing painters on this site, and plenty of them will pass along some great advice.

Oh, and string that bow!

Welcome to the site.

Yikes! What is wrong with his face? Bad plastic surgery or someone is blowing from compressor into his face :)) Seriously, you should replace the head

For only painting two months that is really good.

As supervike said paint in thinner layers to smooth out the colour transitions and that will improve your standard immensely.

That second miniature is ugly as hell but again well painted, again as supervike said, more shading in the face to provide contrast will help.

Very well done for two months out, and good for you to bravely post it up for crits. There's no better way to learn.

You have a good grasp of where to place highlights on cloth and hair. You need more on the skin. Your blends at this point are very good. To get them smoother all you need is thinner paints and practice. Thin, thin, thin, practice, practice, practice, topped off with a very generous dose of patience.

Good job, and good luck!

Far too good for so short a time painting. :)

Legolas looks tidy, good colour choices, and masterly picked out eyes. Could benefit from greater contrast, and with more stages of painting demanding thinned paints that's something to look into.

That second mini, what an ugly facial sculpt. Fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. The contrast on the white tunic looks to have a decent range of tones, but you could work on how much of any given shade you retain. Looking at the back of the tunic, all the darkest tones are in creases that aren't really deep enough to be so dark, while areas that are tucked away aren't really dark enough.

Not Too shabby at all!

Time and evil intent. Mind you I have been painting mini's off and on for 40 years now.{You'd have tought I'd have learnt something along the way}
As I said nothing shabby about the minis your showing here, especially after two months.
Although you've only taken small steps along this road of Obsessive, Compulsive Behaviour, I think you'll get serously addicted with ease.
There's a thread in the General Discussion section:-
http://www.coolminiornot.com/forums...ing-it-to-the-next-level-Competition-painting
Where I've blathered on about some things to consider.
Take a look there and take your time to peruse some of the Articles, especially one or two by Automaton (Sebastian Archer).
Don't be afraid to look at a mini in the gallery and the PM the Painter about how they achieved X, Y or Z effect, a lot of the time you'll get an answer.

Check out the Stickies thread in Painting and Conversions, that may help you find out a lot.
BUT don't overload yourself with info, rather continue to enjoy painting and take small steps, before you know it you'l have covered a great deal of ground.

2 months?

Wow... I am impressed. One suggestion would be to pick out the finer details a little more. The straps on the wrist guard for example. Watch out on the thickness of the line highlights on the boots. The back looks good but the front looks like he kicked some white sand.

Your purples on the shield look very nice.

On Legolas, I agree on the face comment. Thinner paints will make it blend a little nicer. I would also add one more highlight layer of green on the shirt.
