My last 3 visits:
1. Local store, Asked if I could get the limited edition GD mini as I had missed the cutoff date due to work commitments had a chat with the assistant and he said he would try for me ...nice but no joy
2. Needed some black primer, walked in, no one served me as they were all busy, checked the price, walked out and bought auto primer for 1/10th the price
3. Needed a tiny amount of "Water effect" chatted to the manager(?) showed him what i was making (RT Marine with lighting up eyes and an upright pose) looked at the price, then used the bottle they have at the painting bench - his comment "buy a bottle if you are making a 4,000 pt army like that"

My only other hobby related shop visit was visiting a Mall in Indonesia, saw some Gundam robots for sale, and despite the language barrier bought one..very happy with it at $20 (my avatar now) better value than GW - I may have a go at some stop motion with it as it is fully posable.

Saw a picture of some sort of creature they are coming out for the Dark Eldar.

Have to say that is a freakin' cool sculpt....Can't remember what it was called though.

Dorks for Orks
I'll second Shawn, their orks are cool. Pretty much the standard they were what was around when I was in my teens and the comic store I worked at started getting into minis and role playing, after that I've been stuck with em since started with wood elves n high elves got relatively bored of the standard army painting and fell in love with space orks. I love the old books ere we go an all the fluff in em is a blast. but in all the mini manufacturers there isn't any with as indepth and fun a universe to give me a focus for scratch building and having fun with modeling again. Tho from the start thei policies suck when the comic shop wanted to get into it they forced a 3 grand minimum start up order which as a must included starter lines for all their games, instead of lettin us get in what people were playing it hurt the business alot, the crap about online shopping carts, pushy degenerate staff (usually seems they keep one normal person on hand to oversee the mob of basement dwellers that are usually on hand), I never really got into playing so can't comment on rules and forcing folk to rebuy armies perpetually but that is kinda business keep folk buying and all just wish they would get the game set the books set then just delve into tons and tons of diversity model wise but oh well.

Off the top of my head i can think of quite a few shops i dont like going in because i get jumped by overly pushy staff, Waterstones or Whittard for a start, but that wont stop me drinking tea or reading.
I must say that I also encourage the staff in my own store to do the same, it's company policy, as it is for most retail stores.
Your dont like the store.....dont go. Order off the internets.
For my money GW is table top wargaming, and there is nothing i like better that to kick back with my buddies and have a game of warhammer and I won't complain about then price because i cant think of whatelse i could buy with that money that would make me happier.
Sure the mini's are expensive and the game is geared towards making you buy their stuff but show me a company, mini or otherwise, that dosent want you to buy more of their overpriced junk and i'll eat my stormraven!
Today i sold a man a £65 shirt that i knew was produced dirt cheap in eastern europe and all i could think was if he brought the BA battalion with that money he could be having fun with his mates rather than swanning around looking like a tit in that ugly shirt.
So i say go GW, their toys make my life happier.

Being from the Dallas/Ft Worth Metroplex area I've always been spoiled when it came to where to go for gaming. Within a couple square miles of my home growing up I could find four or five stores. There were good and bad ones, but I always liked the GW store. They liked to talk to people about the hobby, and actually talked to you and tried to engage you when you went in. Yeah, I suppose if you want a store where the staff wont say anything to you while you went in and bought stuff you might find it pushy, but I always found that talking to them was better in the long run. I got to know most of the LGS and GW staff in the area personally that way. I was the guy with the awesome conversions that would lose almost every game due to something blowing up in my face on the table (which was always fun).

I went through a lot of hobbies as a kid, and never stuck to a single one. When I look back at all those I think about the money I wasted. When I look back at the money I spent on GW products, and the doors that opened for me socially and people that introduced me to, I don't see it as wasted at all. It gave me an in with a bunch of cool people that don't really "advertise" outside of their hobbies and social groups, and it got me painting and gave me something to do with my off-time.

I used to love and go out of my way to go to an honest to goodness GW store.
It was a treat. And if you wanted a discourse or discussion on the hobby, background, armies, anything.
I miss that.

Have to say that I LOVE the amount of additional gear they have in sprues. The variety of bits that come in each plastic squad kit means you have a lot more choices in posing. It's much better than it used to be. (and easier than modifying each model) Also, take the Stegadon from the Lizardman army in Warhammer. You can set up your Stegadon with 3 different howdah (sp?) configurations, a couple different plate bone configurations, and it fits together pretty well. Not many companies put out something like that.

It is hilarious how many time people have started this kind of thread in the past. It seems that we are doomed to repeat ourselves.

I've been watching and taking part in quite afew of the threads on the boards just lately. The subject of GW has come up alot and not in a good way. Don't get me wrong, I don't work for them, but I'm sure there is some people out there that don't look at their local GW with dread and try and make their trips inside as quickly as they can. I do like going into mine (when I get there) and talking to the guys, I come out with tons of idea's spinning around my head and that spur's me on to doing my best. Lets hear some of the good GW do for a change, please

Loved the battle bunker in Memphis....lots of painting clinics, regular special events, easy to talk to and have questions answered, even got yelled at for buying supplies/minis more than playing in the room of battle tables once. Good guys, friendly atmosphere....but then I moved away and lost interest and respect for the company. I even heard a story from one former employee who was officially reprimanded for telling a customer to buy a skolinsky sable instead of the GW brand brushes....so I got disenchanted quick. I think it also has to do with the local META.

Like many others though, 40k was my gateway drug, and GW was the dealer, so I have them to thank for my participation in this hobby. I just feel like I found someone else with better quality stuff and at least one company who values the player base more than the profit margin...
