Life after Confrontation (Rackham\'s ruined me!)

Imagine that you just started collecting miniatures 7-8 months ago after not buying any since the Golden Age of your D&D-playing youth in the \'80s. At first you buy only from one company that has a wide selection of D&Desque figures to use in the first D&D campaign that you\'ve run in over a decade. You spend a few hundred dollars on them, start painting them and find that you like the figures--and especially the painting of them--in and of themselves, aside from their utility in gaming. So you start looking around for other figures and soon come to another company that you like much more...but this company, you find, is no longer producing metals and much of their selection is difficult to come by and sometimes rather expensive (And, worse still, you realize that you are a couple months late for all the clearance sales). You spend more hundreds of dollars and continue to spend, but you realize that the end--whether in a month or six months--is inevitable: eventually you will run out of figures to buy. You have bought a couple figures from the most popular miniature company, but find their somewhat cartoonish style to not fit your aesthetic. You browse through dozens of other miniature companies and find some stuff that you like, but nothing that compares to the above mentioned company.

If it isn\'t obvious, the three companies mentioned are Reaper, Rackham, and Warhammer. I love Rackham, like Reaper, and am mixed on Warhammer. Currently I own a few dozen of both Reaper and Rackham figures and plan on gradually working my way through the Reaper first before tackling the Rackham figures, which I like so much that I don\'t want to paint until I get to a higher level of skill (at least to the 7+ range according to CMON\'s scale).

As for other companies, I own one Avatars of War figure and like it, but don\'t love it and have a hard time justifying the cost; I also own one Dark Sword figure and like it, but find the rest of the line to be equivalent to Reaper: good not nearly as aesthetically pleasing as Rackham. I have been tempted by--but do not own any of--various companies, including Enigma, Andrea, Ultraforge, Dark Ages, Crocodile, Freebooter, etc. I came across one company that I really liked, but found that they have been long out of production and extremely expensive when they show up on Ebay (Ilyad).

What do you recommend? What of the many companies out there do you think I would like, considering my fetish for Rackham? I will probably continue buying Reaper, but only occasionally and mainly for tabletop usage. I would like to pick up at least one Andrea and Enigma, to at least see how they look \"in the metal.\" At some point I\'ll probably shell out the $80 for that lovely-terrible War Demon from Ultraforge. And of course there are still many dozens of Rackham figures that I want, but not only is my list going down in terms of what I especially want--I have gone as far as typing up a spreadsheet of every Confrontation figure and rating them by degree of desirability, from 1-5; I have most of my 4s and 5s, and a few of the 3s--but eventually available figures will dwindle away.

So my question: What next after Rackham supplies dwindle from Ebay and other online stores? Do you have specific recommendations, given the above (ad nauseam) description? And, perhaps most importantly, is there any company that could be deemed the \"next Rackham\"? I am not looking for someone to simulate Rackham\'s style, but what I am looking for is that unique combination of artistic sensibility and production quantity.

Is there life after Confrontation? (insert annoying emoticon).

Okay that\'s a longer and slightly thought out ramble than some that come on here but here\'s my answer...

Nobody can answer this only YOU....... whatI really like you may hate and so on..

If your looking for safe and steady companies that won\'t cloe on ya then the bad news is they don\'t exist even the mighy GW knows that they are not immune to this particular threat .

so look around see what you like ad buy what fit\'s the bill for you no one else can make that choice for ya...

There are a million and one companies out there.. well not quite but there are a fair few all differ in styles and detals as well as quality and cost...have a look in the gallery there is a drop down at the top for sorting into manufacturers .. have look at a few for a start ...

other than that have fun..

I tried to read that twice, made my head hurt both times..

But, My suggestion is just buy cool minis and paint them.. who cares what company makes them. Don\'t paint yourself into a corner per say.. just enjoy the hobby and what it has to offer.

Demonherald, I hear you and I know that no one is going to make \"that choice for me\" (I hope not!). What I was/am hoping to hear is something like \"Yeah, I hear you--I love Rackham too, but I also like X, Y, and Z...check \'em out.\"

I have very little liking for Rackham, so, yes...there\'s life \'after\' them, just as much as there was \'before\' and \'during\'.

However, I would suggest looking through the CMON Shop, Fantization.com, or any of the other online retailers to see if any of the many other available lines strike your fancy. I would suggest Ilyad or Helldorado, but as you\'ve seen Ilyad is out of business and it seems Helldorado is fast on their heels.

Though I haven\'t bought any of their figures yet (mainly as I don\'t paint very much at all any more), I think Avatars of War is some of the best stuff coming out now. And I personally love Dark Sword\'s Masterworks series, particularly the GRRM stuff.

The thread title really lost me at first, then I read what you wrote ...

Okay, as demonherald, only you can answer that question.
Yes, I like some of the Rackham, I also like many other produced by other companies (Enigma, Andrea, HF, HD, etc). Don\'t confine to companies, you have to look at their actual catogories, as IMO, companies do produce both good and bad (to my taste) mini, it is up to oneself to decide which is which.
For starter, you can browse the category in CMON shop, they have quite a range of manufacturers already.
Another thing you may do is, if you really love Rackham sculpt, you can see what their sculptors were doing now, e.g. Mikh did some work Inifinity & HD , Aragorn Marks did some work for PP. See if their new works for other companies suit your taste.

I too have a big rackham fetish and find it quite annoying that they are stopping production and have been buying as many as I can, sometimes more than one of the same mini! Same goes for Ilyad but finding them has become very difficult (but I was still able to get all the vorag barbarians, hehehe ).

Anyways I reccomend that you check out Hell Dorado minis. They are excellent and totally worth the investment. However it is another company that will be stopping production, but not until June so you will have some time to pick up the ones that you like without fear of them running out.

Also I know of a saite that has good deals still on confrontation. It is a US online store so hopefully you live here to benefit from the deals. www.iconusa.com they have a good selection of kelts, devourers, wolfen, griffin, orcs, and goblins. They do not sell all armies which sucks but you can get some wolfen mini for like $9 which is nice.

Check out Alkemy minis at Kraken Editions, you may like their minis. I am a big fan of Allan C (cool person and was nice to talk to at GD) and his sculpts and he has sculpted a good amount of the Alkemy line. Pretty simplistic minis, nothing as detailed as confrontation, but the quality and paintability is extremely high.

In general I would just say check out some online sites that sell minis and look around to see which ones you like. There are alot of good minis out there you just have to find them. I am a big fan of confrontation, automaton\'s minis, hell dorado, enigma, metal modeles, alkemy, etc.

Nice comment, thanks.
Actually I don\'t see what you are getting steamed up about.
I had difficulty reading and trying to understand the point you were attempting to get across.

Are you just looking for character models? What\'s your \'intent\'? Are you actively looking for 3D representations for your characters? Are you looking to \'field\' the random encounter quota of 6D6 Orcs, Zombies, Kobolds, etc for the above characters? The answers to these questions will help you out, I think.

Most of the \'boutique\' mini companies found on he CMON shop vary in style, genre, price - enough to suit most character aesthetics:
http://www.coolminiornot.com/store/section.php?xSec=2&jssCart=af1afbf70be4443d15adffc38143b0e1

Most I like, some I love, and some I can do without. Your taste will vary of course. There are figs here to cover probably any character class and load-out in the game(s).
I\'m a Hasslefree groupie, and the 4 companies that comprise/inhabit the Forum of Doom always have something good to offer:
http://forum-of-doom.com/index.php

Reaper of course has the A-Z of most fantasy figs out there. Some I love, and some not so much, but I think everyone shares that opinion.

If you\'re looking to populate your dungeons, maybe boxes of GW Orcs, Skeletons, Dark Elves, etc are the way to go to get a good selection of baddies to fight.
GW doesn\'t really do random encounter monsters/beasts, but Underworld minis do, and I think if you\'re an old-skool AD&D\'er, Underworld\'s Giants, Kobolds, and Orcs in particular might appeal to you.

There is a lot of stuff out there that should appeal to you, you just have to find it. I would advise checking out the \'links\' pages of web forums, manufacturers/venders sites, and follow the rabbit-hole wherever it might take you.

Frothers, TMP, FOD, etc are essential.

darthfoley, I\'ve checked out Helldorado and they look pretty good.

falela, I love your advice about following the sculptors themselves...Do you know how I can find out who sculpted what?

AlienGod2, thanks for the link (I\'m putting together an order right now) and advice. I\'ve also found that Noble Knight has quite a few Rackham left in stock; I\'ve been buying mainly off Ebay and through Bartertown. But everywhere else, at least in the US, is very sparse indeed (I just placed an order to Brookhurst Hobbies, which has very little left but some good prices).

Dragonsreach, when someone says your writing makes their head hurt, it is easy to take the \"wrong\" way. Even the \"right\" way was that you found what I wrote incomprehensible and headache-inducing! No big deal, though.

Naukhel, I\'m not a big anime fan but those look well done.

JohnC, the answer to your question about my \"intent\" is twofold: One, for the joy of collecting and painting--I even like pinning and gluing! Two, to use in my D&D campaign. And I\'m looking for an assortment: First and foremost I buy what looks good to me; secondly, whether it has utility in my game.

The best way to keep track of sculptors is to keep updated about miniature news. Some hobby sites are better than others for keeping track of news. CMON is not the best in that respect. Check out Wyrd miniatures\' site (http://www.wyrd-games.net), for instance, where most sci-fi/fantasy/alternative miniature news gets posted (they do nice minis too). Not all companies credit their sculptors, but a lot of the smaller ones do and keeping track of what\'s coming out is a good way of finding out what your favourite sculptors are up to, as well as finding new sculptors that catches your interest.

The problem with following Rackham\'s sculptors is that Rackham never credited their sculptors officially. I do know that a guy called Michael Bigaud did a lot of sculpting for them till a few years ago. He\'s now a freelance sculptor and have done lots of work for Infinity and Helldorado, among others. Another former Rackham sculptor is Yannick Hennebo and he also work with Infinity.

You mentioned liking Ilyad. Those responsible for the best minis there were Jacques-Alexandre Gillois, Thomas David and Allan Carrasco. The two former work with Helldorado at the moment, whereas Allan work with Kraken Editions and does some freelance work as well (JMD Miniatures, Metal Modeles, Enigma etc.).

A company that hasn\'t been mentioned but is one of my personal favourite companies is Hasslefree Miniatures. Their models are quite different from the extravagant Rackham style. Simple, clean sculpts, but Kevin White, the main sculptor, have an eye for the human body like few other sculptors out there working in these small scales.

of course there is, lots of lovely models out there. i don\'t buy anything i don\'t really want (and i still find tons!)

also most companies don\'t use the annoying metal that rackham used. so many times bits have snapped off while i have been bending bits back into shape. also feet that need to be pinned to stop them breaking off..

Keep up with the news in this hobby. As Ritual said, some news sites / manufactuer sites do list the sculptors\' name.

Usually, these sculptors have their own blog, just google them. and they usually cross link between their blogs.

Oh, FYI, Michael Bigaud is Mikh

Aliengod 2? I am without words...

Noble Knights is a great site. They have alot of goods minis left. There is also a spanish website called www.e-minis.net. They have some real good minis that are more difficult to find but they are regular retail price plus shipping is about $23 so they can be pricey. Do not forget that the Rackham online store is having a 50% off sale on all their metal models too. Again it is about $23 to ship to USA and they are trying to get rid of their supply so you may want to check what they have quickly.
