light as a feather

So I understand blending, layering, and nmm, (can\'t do \'em but I know what are), but what is \"feathering\"?

Well I think its when you spread the edge of a still wet coat of paint over the colour below/next to it in thin little strips, kind of giving a feathery edge which results in a kind of blending into the colour below.

Thats what I think it is.

I use it quite a bit sometimes, in combination with layering.

@QuietiManes: All is explained here: Trogdor

@ipaintminis: There is a lot of funny stuff on homestar runner, but Strong Bad drawing a dragon is my favorite. Even more than the burninating.

@Trevor: I think I understand what you\'re describing. How wet is the paint you\'re spreading? Wet enough that the little strips are all blurry or dry enough that the little strips have a destinct edge? Do you leave gaps between the the little strips?

definately trogdor!

The way I understood the feathering was this:

Once you have finished with a new highlighting layer, take a damp brush and \'pull\' slightly down through still wet layer into the darker layer that you are working over. You don\'t want any fresh paint, but rather the dampness of the brush will lightly move some of the newest layer around.

The idea being that once dry the transition line where the two layers meet will be very smooth and soft, instead of a hard edge.

So in answer to your question, I think you want to have \'blurry\' lines....

Hopefully somebody can explain it more concisely than that....

Supervike has it, although I actually use the same technique with paitn on the brush, but its very thin paint, with very little on the brush. I then have a damp, clean brush handy to tidy up with.

Its virtually impossible to describe clearly, you need to see it done. Also I seem to have developed a painting style that simultaneously combines: blending, wetbrushing, feathering and layering so its hard for me to owrk out where one technique ends and another begins. :D

Yeah, Supervike hit the nail on the head really, although either way has it\'s merits, try \'em both & see which one works the best for you
