Lightly textured fur

Primeval

I am doing a conversion wherein a barbarian is getting a sabretooth cat headdress, and I am unsure how to go about creating a lightly textured fur (short-haired could be another way to put it) in the green stuff as I do the fur hanging down from the head part. Any tips would be greatly appreciated (and I apologize in advance to Unclehex for taking his beautifully sculpted Harbinger of the North and giving it the Primeval treatment :) )!

To be honest, if the cat has sleek smooth fur, then sculpt smooth and paint the fur effect. You wouldn\'t really see the grain of the fur in the sculpt as that would imply deep shaggy fur (in my personal and purely humble opinion)

Even more than that, really short fur doesn\'t need to have a fur effect painted, just coloration of the animal should do. I think for a sabertooth headdress, if you get the colors and stripes of the sabertooth right, no one will miss the subtle texture of fur, so I would say just sculpt it smooth.

however if you\'re looking for slightly longer fur than that, maybe look at how GW does the fur texturing on some of the skaven models, it seems to me there is some shorter fur effects there.

I think Eric is right. Smooth short fur, like on big cats, doesn\'t require that much. I would suggest, though, that if you paint on stripes or some other patern on the fur, make the edges somewhat fuzzy. You could make the pattern by painting really thin parallel lines and make them form a uniform coat of paint in the middle but leave the edges sort of jagged. If the lines are thin enough and the paint thin enough I think that could be a good way to simulate short fur. You could also apply the same technique on the base coat and paint lines with a slightly lighter shade so the surface won\'t look too flat and smooth. I hope I make sense of this... :)
