Limited Ed Marine WIP (Ultramarine)

Ok, first off I actually feel like I might actually finish this model!!! I started on Saturday and have so far managed to work on it every evening so far. Overall much more pleased with it than my previous smurf attempts.

I have pretty much completed the blue armour and started working on the gold colours yesterday, with the aim of carrying on shortly.

Now I\'m happy to accept suggestions on how to improve - though happy so far I\'m always striving to get better.

The model is the limited edition one that you get if you spend more than £50 on a GW order. I\'ve not fixed the bolter arm as the molding was awful, so I\'m going to pop a different one on later - might even knock out a heresy one with ballbearings studded into it.

The model was also undercoated with gesso as the weather was foul when I cleaned it up - yes I was being impatient!

ps yes I\'ve just noticed the unpainted blob of leg beside the stonework.

The inside of his powerfist is still unpainted. Are you going for OSL or you just forget about it?:p

I like the blue so far. I think on the powerfist it can be a little more smoother but on the helmet it looks great.

I got the same miniature here and I still need a painting scheme, I might take some ideas from you if you don\'t mind:)

The inside of the powerfist is going to be a dark grey, the same as the ribbing on the joints and the belt. Agreed on the tidyness of the powerfist, I\'ll give that another bash I think - I\'ve found it awkward to get my brush into the fist part for highlighting, so will re-shade to try and tidy it up.

Looking at the pic on my work PC, the photo isn\'t that great and I\'ve spotted a couple of misses I didn\'t see on my laptop screen :) I\'ll have a go at the powerfist again tonight and tidy up some of the odd slips and misses.

No worries on nabbing ideas, I\'ll be chuffed if they help :)

It seems to be coming along well, the only thing i would suggest is possibly adding more shading to the gray joint areas in order to make the blue pop a little more

I paint my thumb.
I didn\'t know we could prime mini with gesso
Does it work good, might be a good alternative to my gooey tole primer.

I\'m digging the blue, though there\'s a couple rough patch along the right side of the bust and leg.

Right, here\'s an update. Not got quite as much done as I\'d hoped as the light in my office is not good enough to paint by so an evening of planned painting on Wednesday didn\'t happen :) The photo is still not that great, but its OK for an interim WIP, my boss still has my light tent so this is me holding a halogen light and some white paper...

I have pretty much finished off the gold now. The silver colours are coming on, though the powerfist piping needs to be toned down as in the daylight (and photo) its quite shiney. I\'ve redone the powerfist and that looks a load better, plus a couple of odd bits, though am sure that peering at the photo will show up more.

I still have to do: greys; powerfist palm, ribbing, belt (round the back). White; backing of belt buckle. Leather: pistol holder plus. Reds; eyes, gem, powerfist \'gem\', seal. Plus odd bits like the stonework and the purity seal parchment and I need to work out what highlights to put onto the shoulder pad.

Oh obvisouly he\'s still missing a backpack and an arm :p

@GreenOne.
I\'ve used Bob Ross Black Gesso for this undercoat, so can\'t comment on other brands. I thinned it down (50/50) and it took far longer to undercoat than out of a spraycan. It scratches off easily as well. That said it is perfectly matt, flat and easy to touch up. You\'re not constrained by weather conditions or making sure that your model and spray are at room temperature. Its not 100% black, which is actually better as you can see how shadows fall more easily.

Managed to get a few more bits done last night.

I messed the palm of the hand up, so that needs to be redone, it looks OK in the pic but the real thing looks awful. I must admit I\'ve found it hard to paint the grey smoothly and ended up watering it down more than I\'m generally comfortable with, especially on the belt buckle. The armour joints need a little wash and the gem a little white highlight.

Most likely have a go at the pistol holder and start the backpack tonight. I\'m going to be using just a regular plastic backpack, rather than the metal one the model came with.

Let me know what you think :)

EDIT: *sigh* realised I\'ve been taking all of these pictures without macro mode turnd on - bum.

Here\'s a better one:

Blimey seems like ages since I\'ve done any significant work on this model due to lots of work (which I still seem to have).

Here is what its looking like so far. With the exception of a final highlight on the metal and the gold skull, the backpack is now finished. I still have the leather left to do on the main body of the mini, the purity seal and a cable by the neck. Oh and the stone is pap at the moment!

webex4.jpg

Now I\'ve dug out the arm that\'s currently blu-tacked on, which I think looks OK, but I\'m of two minds if I should swap the hand to be holding a gun of some kind. Its the only one of this arm I have, so I\'m loathe to mess it up :D

Of course any pointers on the paint job will be gratefully received.

I love the work so far, i think the pointing arm is just too small. Also it doesnt have the grace and power that the entire model leads to as the focal point. I think a bulky weapon such as a storm bolter should be in order, something pointing directly down his line of sight. Or him resting his arm on his raised knee, again something bulky perhaps is in order. I like to see very dynamic positions in models, and this one certainly deserves a good one! Just my thoughts.

I paint my thumb.
I think the jetpack looks somewhat darker than the body, maybe light it up a little.
I agree the pointing arm looks odd when compare to the big one.

Looking great so far. I think the reason why the pointing arm seems a bit off is just because there is no shoulder pad on it. Once he gets the shoulder pad on there it will bulk it up a bit and make it seem more natural.

You might just not be done with it, but I think the gold needs to be brighter. Also his eyes don\'t look finished (sorry if you said you still needed to work on those parts and I missed it.)

Thanks for the replies so far, much appreciated. :D

A shoulder pad makes some difference, but doesn\'t add much in the way of weight to the mini (still messing around to make a studded heresy one). I\'ve dug out a storm bolter and grabbed a left gun hand for it (why do nearly all plastic guns seem to be right handed?), so will start to assemble this soon.

The backpack is a little darker than the body, I will lighten it up a bit, but might wait until I glue it on, so that I get a better idea of matching the tone.

Before the last photo, I\'d have said that the gold and eyes were finished - however that last photo seems to have toned them down, the gold especially. The eye isn\'t as smooth as I thought it was either! I guess its a product of doing stuff late at night :D On a plus point, I\'m glad that its shown up now rather than when I\'m varnishing it up.

talk soon
