liquid basing

Hi, I have inquires about \"liquid basing\" - water like
rivers that are painted on the citadel bases. I would
like to know the techniques into painting transparent
like waters, and the appropriate colors to do so, as
well as the types of items I need in order to build
this unique scenery. Thanks

welcome to CMoN.

PVa (white) glue dries clear so you can paint under it and see thru it. or paint it once it has dried.

also their is Woodland Sceneics Reaslistic Water.

I\'ve used PVA before, and it works ok. Not great, but not too bad. The Woodland Scenics stuff is really good, but it can be a bit pricey.

I\'ve heard that clear nail polish works well for water, too. I still haven\'t gotten around to trying that, but it\'s on my list. Straight Future Floor Finish works pretty well, and since I have a bottle of that around anyways, that\'s usually what I go with for my water bases.

Well first you have to paint the surface in the colour you want representing the liquid itself. (did that sentence make any sence..? I\'ve just read to much philosophy lately) So if it should be a toxic swamp paint the surface in that kind of manner. Maybe choosing a green-brown colour. If should be a lake paint it maybe a bluish green or grey or black.

Then you want the glossy water finnish and for that you can use scenic water. Gloss finish, PVA, nail polish or most things that dry glossy may work too.. depending on what finish you\'d like to achieve. For a toxic swamp I might want a less glossy finish than scenic water gives.

If you want a river I suggest getting the Woodland scenics \"water effects\". it is easily appliable and ideal for making flowing waters and waterfalls.

well...

My dragon in my gallery is testament to how NOT to use realistic water :)

hehe

I really messed that base up :(

I used water effects because it can be sculpted more. It\'s essentially a thicker white glue so it dries clear. THe problem...if it\'s too thick, the portion under the surface will still be white, so you need to make sure it\'s a smooth thin layer. But since it\'s thicker, it won\'t flow all over.

Realistic Water (as opposed to water effects) apparently flows more, so depending what you want to do, a bit of Water Effects may be better (white glue is good, the manager at local GW did the bases for the aquatic lizardmen units with it...looks cool :) )

Later.
