ie. people like me.
peps with no great works to their name. no great numbers of figs. no competions ribbons.
just ordinary joes trying to be helpfull (and mayby actually hindering instead) voting away, giving opinions etc.

are we welcome?

i mean would you rather we ( me ) didn\'t post?
would you rather 1 or 2 posts from the gods who deign to respond or would you rather be inundated by \"how i do it\"?

i think i know whats what in mini painting. i read up on everyones articles and \"how i do it\"s. i have a good eye for skill level when voting. but ultimately i don\'t have a GD or even a 8+ vote.

don\'t get me wrong! i\'m not going to stop posting or anything but i would like to know what others think about it.

just how interested are people in lay comments?

Comments are always welcome, and fun :) no matter what the skill level is of the person that gives the comment.

Take away all the uber painters and this site still clicks along. Take away the average joes and this site dies. Not only are you welcome, you\'re required.

Also, I notice a number of the most frequent posters don\'t have much to speak of in their galleries. If it doesn\'t bother them, it shouldn\'t bother you.

So I have said, and so it shall be.

Ditto! we can all be critical of each others work, even if we\'re not capable of producing stuff of the same quality!:D

I think that the more all of us learn the more we can appreciate the elements of a great looking mini, even if our own current skills cannot acheive the highest ratings. Some times just expressing your feelings about a paint job, (dare I say trying to teach something?) helps us understand the techniques better ourselves. Critique a mini and then go and try make it happen in your own work, a great way to improve.

The world is full of little people that by their participation and passion for the hobby are not in any way little people!

It\'s a democracy!

Everyone should vote and comment as appropriate.

If painting God (a), wanted the opinion of painting Goddess (b) on his latest work he would send her an image via email. The mere act of posting on this public forum is an invitation for ordinary joe Schmoe to vote and comment as they see fit.

Sometimes some of the more idiotic/uninformed comments make you gasp, but hey! That can also be part of the fun as a recent thread showed.:D

One of the MOST prolific posters doesnt have any pics up - but that doesnt stop him!

Having said that the information and advice he dispenses is well informed and helpful.

Of course the other 50% of his posts are complete nonsenselollollol (and sometimes make you laugh)

Wow!

Nailpainter appears to be speechless!

At any rate, I am a firm believer that everyone has a valid opinion. The best technical painters may not have as much color sense or imaginitive drive say, as a less skilled painter, and vise-versa. Everyone has an opinion or a sense of creativity that can lead to both contstructive and interesting comments, so by all means, please continue to post to your heart\'s content!

post away....

I have always viewed this site as \"mini-painters 101\".

So, in my mind the only people who would never want to post are

1. The ones that know everything and don\'t want to share.

2. The ones that don\'t want to learn more.

So, if you don\'t fit those two categories, post away.

Heck, even if you do fit in those, still post away.....lol

little people posting

From my perspective, there are no \'Little People\' and there are no \'Gods\' and it\'s the totallity of this group of human beings that makes it such a learning and fun experience. I agree, that by posting your pictures on a public site you have indeed given your permission to receive puplic opinion; however, try to be kind. We can only control our own actions and words, so as for me, if I am going to critizize another person\'s hard work and effort, I shall include some words of advice and share any knowledge I may have gleaned over the years to help.

I do not understand those whom vote impetuously, adding insulting remarks simply because they do not like certain sculpted figures and/or, manufacturers. There are those of us whom paint, those whom scuplt and some who do both; When one submits a painted miniature for critique and discussion, why deduct points for the sculpture? When someone has actually sculpted and/or converted then painted the figures, remarks regarding ones scuplting ability would be appropriate and welcome.

Most of all, show some decorum in your assessment of others.... we can all be teachers and students alike!)

You\'re funny Glyn! Nailpainter speechless? Never.

Congratulations on your well deserved win. Loved your color palette and especially the remarkable freehand work!

Did I hear my name? It must be me, the OTHER funny guy in the forum is Chrispy, but he\'s got a lot of pics posted... Or perhaps there is another prolific poster without credited pics...

I also think (evidently) it\'s quite OK to post in the forums if you don\'t have any pics uploaded. The latter may be due to any number of reasons: no good camera, being really ashamed of the quality of your minis, or pure laziness (last one applies to me).

In fact, this thread has made me think: the real reason why I have no pics to my credit is that I really haven\'t had anything new painted in ages. I feel like I have a lot of inertia, and I\'ve been immobile for too long: it\'s taking me a lot to pick up momentum (and a brush) and start painting again. BUT, one thing I can do: have fun with my digicam and start posting pics of my old minis. THAT is a promise!

First thing to remember, Farseerlum, is that none of the \"Gods\" (or the \"Evil One\" of Chrispy\'s night mares) started out that way - they all started out as just an ordinary joe just like you or me with no ribbons or awards to their names - and by taking the time to work in the hobby were able to rise to the point they are at now. The advantage you and I have now is that there is this site where we can put up our mini\'s for critique by a truely international group of painters who by and large are not going to pull any punches with their commentary. Unlike your family or friends, most of the folks here will never tell you something that you want to hear to make you happy - sure, that means you have to deal with the occassional flaming troll who has the social skills of a four year old on a sugar high and believes that the only way to paint is \"by the book\", but you run into those clowns wherever you go in life. After looking at 20000 plus miniatures, I can say that by and large the comments made by the users here on the items posted are constructive, supportive, or inquisative, not destructive.

The forums are a completely different matter - they are a free form slash and burn slugfest and it shows. Not that there is anything wrong with that, its just that sometimes we all forget that there are other people on the other side of the screen, not bits or machines, and occassionally it shows in some of what goes on here.

Now to ramble in my rant a bit - As one of the more prolific posters to the forums, with one of the smaller galleries on the site, I have to agree with both Ovus and Nomis here - post away, regaurdless of what you\'ve got up picture wise. I\'ve looked at all your works recently (ok, I checked them before I started this post) and in my opinion, you do good work - in the 6 to 8 range. Me? I\'m a hack and I know it, but if my advise can help a good painter get better, then why not give it, regaurdless of what I can do myself? If you can take something from a comment I make, an article I write, or even a forum post and use it, then I have passed on the 23 years of experience I have in this area, and have done some small thing to support the hobby as a whole, and that is one of the best ways to support the hobby that I can think of, and thats what it all comes down to, supporting the hobby and passing it on to others who are interested in it.

Looks good to me

I also started painting about tabletop quality. Though your blending is a bit better than mine. I will go through all you\'re mini\'s later and rate them, but from the thumbnails I dare say I couldn\'t give any of them less than a seven. I give fours to those that don\'t have depth but the paints in the right place. I give sixes to those that drybrush well, and I do mean they have to do it right. eights are reserved for those that use blending. And tens are sparse - for those that use imagination, blend colors, color schemes (Even if I don\'t like the scheme) to tie the figure together, and the most important thing of all, if I get goose bumps. Anyway thanks for reading.:flip::bouncy::flip:

Damn right you are welcome! Come on in the waters fine!
You comments and opinions are what help us all to look at our mini\'s in a more critical light and not just the sparkly eyed glamour of the latest painted marvel we done. (What a mouthful) I\'ve improved since joining this site and it\'s down to constructive criticsm (& sarcasm). As well as the ribald mickey taking amongst ourselves.
This site is all about same minded nutters who end up being internet friends! Join the Asylum, the Straightjackets are free! lol

My highest work so far is a 6, and I keep posting, I can\'t paint like the gods, so I don\'t need to know how they do it.
