Just out of curiosity, I tried to find \"cornwall\" on a map from \'mapquest.com\", it says it doesn\'t exist.....

Are you sure that is in England?

You had me worried there for a minute Mr Vike. Perhaps I am a figment on my own imagination?

But no, you can find a map here:

You do exist!!

Oh I see now. I thought Cornwall was the name of a city...but it is an entire area.
Do the names Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, etc... serve a purpose, or show legal jurisdictions, or is it just a name.

Here in the states we have a Federal government, state government (mine is Iowa), county government (mine is Black Hawk) and finally a city government. But my area is also known as the \"cedar valley\", or northeast Iowa...

My wife and I have been talking about a trip to England/Ireland/Scotland for years. Someday we may stop talking about it and actually do it.

Good grief! You appear to have more tiers of government than us, something I thought was impossible.

If you just take England, as opposed to Scotland, Eireland and Wales. Central Gov is in London, then the rest of the country is divided up into counties, which I always assumed were the equivalent of your states, but much, much smaller. (Didn\'t know you had counties as well).

Counties are the basis for \'local government\' which is responsible for all the crap jobs like policing, education etc as opposed to defence/foreign policy. Cornwall, Devon, Dorset etc are all counties. Counties vary in size enormously, like your states, and some rural ones are relatively huge. A lot of large urban areas have county status in terms of politics etc. eg Portsmouth is in the county of Hampshire, geographically, but has it\'s own local government.

The only thing about this that is OT is that we are \'little people\' having a chat. Personally I am very fond of the CMON bar as it is a lot cheaper than the bar I used to drop in on my way home for work. I also don\'t hear that \'my dinner is inthe dog\' quite as often as I used tolol

If you ever make it over here, make a point of dropping in for a beer or three, hopefully I will have moved by then and have a house to call my own again...:D

What about Wales! The castles, the mountains, the coastline, the huge areas of poverty due to an unsupportive and uncaring government who think its better to spend hundreds of millions on stadia , opera houses and huge new builings for the puppet Assembly of Wales, ALL in the capital while the remnants of our industrial communities in the valleys are ignored and left without investment.....er, did I mention the castles?

....sorry about that but it was my 100th post...got carried away with the excitement.:D

Points well taken....

@Uncle Hex. First of all congrats on the 100th post! Secondly, I shouldn\'t have omitted Wales, as seeing Castles may be \'reason number 1\' to be going.

@Finn. We do have tons of \'tiers\' of Government. Here in Iowa alone, there are 99 distinct counties, each with the own local government. Each county then has a variety of cities, towns, and townships each with another layer. Population wise, Iowa is towards the bottom end of the United States. With 99 counties, plus all the city government (not to mention the state government) it is a wonder that not all us Iowans work for the government!!

Aahh, Wales. Some friends and I spent some time in England quite a few years ago. It wasn\'t until we got to Wales that we had some proper mountains... Nice...

Real mountains in Wales?

I remember when I thought we had real mountains in Scotland, then I went on holiday to the French Alps. Ben Nevis (the highest in Scotland, or Britain for that matter) 4408 ft, Mont Blanc is 4807 metres, bit of a difference there.

I know what you mean though, I always feel weird in England, especially the south east, it\'s so flat. To paraphrase Bill Bryson \"If you stood on a phone directory you\'d have a view\". :)

You should take a look overhere for flat, our highest (and only) \'mountain\' is something like 300 meters (900 feet I think). :)

I live right in the middle of the mountains, just by looking out my window I see a 3000 meters tall moutain, and if i go to the front of the house I see a 3500 ish mountain. But I\'d gladly give up the mountains to live in a city with a bit more animation :D Messa like to party:bouncy:

Parts of your country are below sea level as I remember, so you actually have negative elevation :) It\'s a very pretty country from the air though, I flew over it going from Amsterdam to Bremen a few years ago, looks like a huge patchwork quilt.

14,410 feet of majestic mount rainier always parked right behind the rain clouds.
From little people to big mountains - where do these things go wrong?
