How naive of me. I thought that by Cost Reduction they were going to start selling cheaper products. Dear me, how thick am I!

not much of a surprise. i already said in the previous one on this that they would most likely be bought out and turned into something else but never the same as the glory days. i\'m fine with it, maybe now there will be a major restructuring and they will turn out better in the end.

Actually from a business standpoint it makes sense - now to see if it will actually produce the desired results.

True. But it\'s weird guff when a hobby that used to feel so personal is now so global and impersonal. They see numbers and the end user sees a hobby. Weird I say!

Businesses have to be profitable, or they cease to be businesses.

If they don\'t make money, they will soon not be in business to sell anything.

Smaller margin and more volume (lower prices and sell more) or less volume and more margin (sell less at higher prices). That is the fun choice of being in management.

I don\'t think GW can cut out the retail stores completely. It\'s what gets new people (read kids) into the hobby (read addiction). Before the store at the Mall locally no one knew what mini painting was. There was one store that was mainly a video game rental place that ran games every now and then, but they tended to stick to the specialist games. No one knew anything about GW.

Now I can have CMON open at work and pretty much everyone that sees it asks if it has anything to do with the store in the mall. Or they note their kids, cousins, brother, dad play the game.

What I would like to see and what I think would be financially viable to them is getting back to the old GW Specialist stores and Roge Trader shop deals. Where specialist shops would not only carry their product but also do open gaming and run tournaments. This would take the stress off of their pockets and move it to the FLGS.

It\'s the GW run stores that are a money sink. After all they do bring in new customers but not as much as they would hope. Unless your already intot he hobby and into GW you wouldn\'t see much reason stepping into their retail stores. However a FLGS selling GW among other products run a better chance of bringing in new GW customers. After all if little bobby comes into the FLGS to pick up a Reaper fig and sees GW for the first time that\'s a customer GW would not have had otherwise, or at the least a customer they would nto have gotten for several more years. Then again who knows what this all will mean, other then GW\'s Director being put under a microscope for what stinks badly of insider trading.

I agree with Onis Lair.
Many of us old timers were playing 40K before GW stores even existed.
Word of Mouth, and gamers walking into the FLGS got GW to the point were they could build their own stores, which they probably shouldn\'t have done.
Name another gaming company that has their product exclusive stores around the world.
I can\'t think of one, and there\'s probably a reason for it.

There are Wizards of the Coast stores, dedicated to just WotC stuff.

Not nearly as prolific as the GW stores though. Closest one to me is in Great Lakes crossing, in another country about an hour away.

I do think the GW stores do get new people into the hobby though. You see tons of people who walk by check out the minis in the display casses. Of those if just a few step inside for a closser look, and of those few if an even smaller group get into the hobby the store served it\'s purpose. Get a result like that in a city that\'s big enough and that\'s a lot of new buisness.

I think having a GW store in the Eaton Center in downtown Toronto makes sense. I don\'t think having one in Devonshire Mall in Windsor (pop of about 200K) makes sense at all.

I would think a large coverage of FLGS supported by a few \'headquarters\' type stores would be the best model.

When GW started to become more popular here, I used to frequent a couple stores that had a smattering of stuff. For birthdays we would take a trip over the board to the nearest Specialty shop (about 45 mins away). Once a year we would head up to Toronto and make a point of hitting the awesome GW only store. It seemed to work well back then. I don\'t see why it wouldn\'t now.

So here\'s a funny fact... last Friday I handed in a 19 page report on Games Workshop\'s activities in the stock market and I analyzed their annual reports for the past 3 years. It was very noticeable that they were planning something big, because their expenses and long-term assets were on the rise, however just about everything else was on the fall (such as revenue, etc...) interesting to hear a story like this right after reading through all of their reports in the past few years.

Probably because GW has pretty much pissed off every LFGS that they come into contact with.

edit: My LFGS will not carry GW products. They will have a catalouge and will order for you, but will not carry their blister packs or boxes.
GW has too many rules on how their products are to be displayed.
