London Explosions

ug...I\'m gonna put my foot in my mouth...again...

Well, I disagree Scott. We certainly can fight terrorism with guns and bombs, and we pretty much have to. They are not going to stop what they are doing, until they are dead..

BUT..more to your point, there is already a 2nd pronged effort to start sowing the seeds of freedom. The younger generations will be able to see that freedom, not oppression by a fanatical regime, is worth fighting for. Unfortunately, this will take a very long time...Possibly a few generations. I suppose you could call it endoctrination to freedom if you\'d like, but I believe that the tenants of freedom are a basic human right.

Use the guns on the terrorists then, not an entire people. I have no qualms about targeted special forces attacks on terrorist cells - wipe them out by all means. Thatcher used that tactic against the IRA - \'cut off the head and the body should die\' type thing. Just think the thousands of innocent people killed in Iraq has done more harm than good...

I\'m afraid they want to be killed as martyrs, it\'s a very important part of their indocrination and it has become a highly regarded social gratification. What they don\'t want, including their gourous, is to spent the rest of their life in jail pondering about acts and consequences. Getting ride of terrorism is a police job not a military one. And while I really hope that I\'m wrong, I think you can\'t impose freedom to people, they must fight for it in order to make it lasts.

@ Spacemunkie: ...if a bit messy on a grammatical point of view :)

@ Medved: Try to drink something strong in good compagny ( but not alone). Did they give you something to prevent the asthma?

Sucks to be you, Londoners :(
Honestly, my most sincere condolences and thoughts go to you all. Medved, got off lucky... good for you!

So that ominous Al-Kaida group claimed responsibility. Still, mark the word \"claim\"... What if some anti-glob guys or heck, even some Pro-Olympia French guys \"claim\" responsibility? It\'s all about taking the limelight for a shocking event. My point is that government and people should thoroughly investigate instead of just jumping to any cues thrown at them by one source or another... (like finding an unscathed passport in the remains of a fire that melted steel girders...)
Let\'s hope it don\'t get worse...

I definately cannot argue with that....

I am most likely out of my league here anyhow. I\'m just a regular working joe from the farm country of the US. I know little of international politics. We are very insulated from the rest of the world, and quite possibly my World views are a bit niave because of it.

I do know that the Amercian stance on terror has only recently become one of aggresive posturing. For many years, terrorism has been treated as a criminal act, and not an act of war. I think we have fought a similar covert op type war, only to see the terrorist\'s acts increase in number and scale.

We do agree though, War is an ugly brutal thing, and something we\'d all be better without.

Its impossible and stupid to attack countries which \"harbour terrorists\". Hell the UK harbours terrorist if no intentionally. You cannot attack a country -you just hurt the people.

Best way is to keep purueing intellignce, freezing people\'s assets and basically working your damnest to keep people safe.

Attacking a country just helps the terrorists recruit and helps propogate more ill-will towards yourself.

NOT attacking countries doesn\'t help either.

I\'d just like to point out that we HAD NOT YET attacked Afghanistan or Iraq when 9/11 happened so doing nothing doesn\'t help either. At least not for us in the US. We\'ve been targeted as the Great Satan for some time now not because of our attacking anyone but because we support Israel. Perhaps if we agreed to their demand of allowing them to slaughter all the Jews, they might stop hating us, but I doubt it.

Sorry. I\'ve been trying to keep my nose out of the political end of this thread, but I couldn\'t.

There is a difference between a country such as the UK and even the US that may have terrorists in the country and countries like Afghanistan and Iraq that openly harbored and trained terrorists. The best way to prevent terrorist activities is to eliminate the training of the terrorists. Thus it was necessary to take out the training camps in these countries. Also many of the high ranking \"officials\" of Al Qiada were present in Afghanistan and are working in Iraq thus the attempt to \"cut the head off of the snake\". The vast majority of the innocent people who are being killed in Iraq are being killed by terrorists (many from countries other than Iraq) who don\'t want the efforts of the US to succeed in that country not by US troops.

Firstly: I would like to say thank you to those people who were asking about Fran & I. As Steve (Finn17) has said I live 250 miles north of London in Bolton.
This is a former Cotton Mill town with a very mixed, diverse and friendly community the vast majority of whom are as sickened about the London Atrocities as I am.

Secondly: The singer who\'s publicity machine has turned this tragedy for the families of the victims into a sickening publicity seeking gimmick need to look to the bereaved families. Then try to look into a mirror.

Thirdly and lastly: I would like to ask all CMON\'ers who are reading this forum to just stop all the political bickering about who is right or wrong.
What has happened in London cannot be changed nor can the past events in Madrid or New York be undone.

Instead of arguing over the causes and responsiblities give your thoughts to the families of those who have died and those who have been maimed.
The dead have peace. It is the living who have to continue their pain.

Sorry, DR That\'s precisely why I was trying to avoid getting into the whole political commentary side of this. Some of us cacn only keep our mouths shut just so long. You are right though and I shall refrain from any more political discussion and leave this thread to it\'s original intent.

It didn\'t seem to be a gimmick, just a complete lack of self awareness and total pig ignorance. Not defending the guy, but I posted the link because I couldn\'t believe how f*cking dumb the guy and his PR people were.

My housemate mentioned that today. F*cking disgusting if you ask me.

i can just see it: \'Yes sir we do have rooms available, but there will be a special terrorist attack surcharge for today only\'. Call me a cynic if you will!

Wonder if the cabbies were more generous?

That\'s just ridiculous. If and when you find out who the money-grubbing :insert expletive here: are, let us know.

I had actually been thinking that it would be a great move, both for PR and just in terms of humanitarian goodness, for hotels to LOWER their prices due to the hardship. I hate when the human race forces me to lower my expectations yet again.
