I feel your pain dude. Mr Cage has ruined my last few days as well (he's nearly finished with me though :( )

love the marine dude. He's coming together brilliantly

I successfully decreased the priority of Mr. Cage and made a lot of progress on the helmet, see the mugshots:

The lenses were based with 1:1 mix of VMA 71014 Gunship Green and VMC 70810 Royal Purple, then painted with VMC 70810 Royal Purple, VMC 70908 Carmine Red, VMC 70956 Clear Orange, VMC 70915 Deep Yellow, with 1:1 mix of VMC 70827 Lime Green and Titanium White and finally with Titanium White reflection dot.

I failed to clear the mold lines on back of the head correctly, some scratches remained, so I need to fix and repaint it.

Furthermore painting a sphere (or curved, spherical-like helmet) is still hard on me, still took a lot of time to make the highlight the helmet, especially in yellow.

Looking good mate. The light on the beak(?) looks very cool. I think it needs a wee bit of edge highlighting on the sides to finish it off

He's got the German flag printed on the visor of his helmet... that dude's a big fan! Just kidding, it looks great!
It does look from the orientation of the torso that the back of the helmet would receive more light, though. Maybe check that?

Helmet is almost finished, except metallics (I plan to switch to new brush and use this one for metallics, hence the delay).

Headlight and my first OSL was painted with VMC 70908 Carmine Red and Titanium white.
The glaze did not work well when I used my usual 1:1 mix of water:retarder, so tried Vallejo Glaze Medium instead. I did not like that very well, either, as it pulled up the water through wet palette, making a watered pool over the paint, but at least I could paint with it much better. Seems that I have to switch either VMA or inks (VGC Inks?) for better result.

Edit: Well, images look much better in half this size...

I was thinking of Austrian Empire black-yellow flag, as their coat of arms already have the two headed eagle, but it would not look good in the middle of a yellow space marine ;) (kidding, of course)

Thanks, I will check later, especially as
- OSL pushed the balance around a bit,
- I planned a slightly raising platform, so black of the helmet will be lower, and a bit more in the shadow,
- it will be in the shadow of the backpack, too, and
- I wished to set the focus on the eyes.

Furthermore I could paint more or less the pistol.

I mixed VMA 71041 Armour Brown with VMC 70838 Emerald, then highlighted with VMA 71066 Gold and VMA Gold mixed with VMA Chrome 71064 for the brass parts (e.g. for coils). In hindsight Emerald was not needed, VMA Gunship Green would have been sufficient.

For the gold I used 1:1 mix of VMA Armour Brown and VGA 72756 Glorious Gold as basecoat, then highlighted with VGA Glorious Gold and 1:1 mix of VGA Glorious Gold and VMA Chrome.

The grip is simple mix of VMC Black 70950 and Titanium White:

Looking really cool as the parts come together. I think the level of wear on the armor would correspond with heavier staining on the grip of the pistol.

Thanks!

I just noticed that it has the same color as knee pad bands, will have the same scratches, too.

And first look on the gun:

What reallyI do not understand how the metallics should work.
The knife blade is ok, I paint one end to Chrome, the other to Steel:Black mix, and it can be seen.
But when I painted the holey tubes in the middle, I really do not understand how should they work.
E.g. I painted the top with Chrome:GloriousGold, the side with GloriousGold and the bottom with ArmourBrown:GloriousGold, and when I turn the gun around, the top of the tubes reflect definitely more direct light than the bottom, but when they are reflecting ambient light, I can not really feel the difference.

So, do you know any good description on how the good metallics should look?

I agree that the metals do not match the standard of the other sections of the model, though they do look good. Really, I think the rest of the figure is just nicer, not that the metallics are bad. I think you're right to want to improve them, though, as this model has the potential to be a really terrific piece. Maybe you can give an example of the look you're aiming for? There are a lot of folks on here who can help you achieve just about anything you're after.

use more glazes of colors to darken the gold. The normal paint will make it more matt, thereby helping with the reflection thing (but it can be overdone).
Also Armor Brown covers badly normally. 2 great colors for shading gold (TMM or NMM): purple (VGC-liche purple) and a dark red-brown (VGC-dark flesh).

Also you could make the highlights on metals pop more by using metal-medium instead of the silvers (like chrome too) as they have a bit of black/grey in them. But pure metallic medium is just that, pure sparkle. :)

Toad, one of my issues is that I do not know how a good metallic should look. After that it is much easier to implement it  Until then I try to paint as if it were NMM.

Thanks MAXXxxx,

A couple of layers of Armor Brown helped, that "covers badly normally" is fine for applying it as dark red-brown glaze (I used the cold glaze Armour Brown:Emerald for the brass parts).
I will try Metallic Medium, too, it is not easy to highlight chrome...
