The cooper cogwheel looks terrific, I could not tell the difference between it and a TMM one. Which colours did you use on it, if I may ask?

Maenas,

thanks, the recipe is quite simple, the secret ingredient is VGC 72066 Tan (try to compare it with some metallic copper in a shop), and I use VMC 70872 Chocolate Brown for shadows, VGC 72041 Dwarf Skin for highlights and VGC 72004 Elf Skintone for extreme highlight.

I starting with Chocolate Brown basecoat, and will leave it in the deepest recesses.
Next comes 1:1 ChocolateBrown:Tan, covering all the lit/raised parts (where the sun can shine, if you are turning aroung the mini).
Then Tan for the lower 3/4 part, 1:1 Tan:DwarfSkin for the lower 1/2, and Dwarf Skin for the lowest 1/4.
Finally some Elf Skintone for some of the edges.

This is a bit too simple, but was remarkably successful for the middle of the axe. I need some more study to use it correctly on tubes and other simple shapes, but for now (to be similar to the other members of the army) should do. Especially as I targeted only a TTQ++ level.

But I honestly do not remember where did I this this idea from, it happened ~3 years ago, when I painted my night goblin army.

Almost, those are similar to my gold colors :)
BTW I adapted the NMM GOLD TUTORIAL by Rodion Roeoender Rubin to VMC (Chocolate Brown, English Uniform, Golden Brown, Gold Yellow, Ice Yellow, Ivory for spot highlights).

What I starting to learn, e.g. from this video is that I should keep at least half of the metal areas dark, and keep the highlight on smaller areas.
So the dwarfs will remain in this comic-like color set, I will practicing the blending on them, and will try another minis, for comps and a new army (maybe skavens) painted with a better style.

Cogsmith is looking fantastic, I'm loving the distinctive style. And I always have love for all things squiggly

Hi! How do you make your bases? They are very realistic looking, i'd love to see if I can copy you!

Hi Boguz,

As I do not know which one you are refer to, here is

The dwarf base:
1. I glue pine bark mulch with PVA to the base. After that, I cover the bark again with watered down PVA glue, as the bark is prone to break into slices.
2. When dry, with additional PVA I add some sand, like https://www.pk-pro.de/CP-Sand
3. Priming with back (I use airbrush)
4. Priming only from above with white
5. Airbrushing with VGC 72088 Blue and VGC 72089 Green inks from above. Stones will have a nice turquoise hue.
6. I mix Vallejo 73108 Brown Iron Oxide pigment with water, and wash the base with it. The pigments will stay in the recesses.
7. IMPORTANT: varnishing with sateen varnish. You can not add snow or drybrush further as the pigments will get everywhere and will ruin everything
8. I mix soda-bicarbonate and matte/sateen varnish to have a dense snow-like material and apply it to the base.

Unfortunately I deleted all of my pictures of this process ~3 days ago, as I thought no one is interested in it.

Good news is that I plan to paint a couple of dwarfs in 2 weeks, so I can take photos, too, if you are still interested.

Welcome. I missed an important step:

1. I glue pine bark mulch with PVA to the base. After that, I cover the bark again with watered down PVA glue, as the bark is prone to break into slices.

When I drill the bark, or pull out a mini, or just press it a bit stronger, the bark sometimes comes apart, so always cover it with watered down PVA glue. I will be soaked into the bark, making it harder and sticking the layers together.

That cogsmith is lovely. Really good colour choices and love your style. Squigs are cool too. Love the vibrancy. Suits them really well.

pariahrob:

Thanks! IRL squigs look much better, especially the red and the turquoise ones (out of the five).

Next is color orange:

First try was done with CavalryBrown, OrangeBrown, OrangeBrown:SunnySkinTone, but failed miserably, even VGC ink glazes did not help.
Second try was CavalryBrown, OrangeRed, OrangeRed:SunnySkinTone.

I think orange is the most difficult color to paint, as you can find tutorials for red, yellow, white, black, but really few orange tutorials are on the web.

Last one will be the blue.
