hey everyone.. I just finished my 5th mini the other night and submitted it.. you can find it here: http://www.coolminiornot.com/?id=48311

I\'m really looking for some comments, especially on how I can improve.

This was my first attempt at layering highlights, mostly on the blue armor, which on the larger parts have 4 or 5 layers - though they are very subtle... I really think I need to make the changes alittle more drastic, yes?

I also had a bugger of a time with the face.. the eyes on the scouts aren\'t molded/sculpted very well, and hard to paint in :(

but anyways.. I really want to improve, so please tell me what you think sucks and needs to be addressed ^^

thanks in advance to all... especially for the support when I have become discouraged

only 5th?

Very good stuff. Your painting is very clean, which will help a ton as you improve.

I like the subtle highlights, but you are right when you say the need to be more drastic. This is an area I struggle with also, but you might have to force the highlights, even to the point where you feel that you are slightly over doing the mini.

Another small thing I would suggest is using a little bit of a contrasting color. Although not necessary, a little orange or yellow on his chestplates would compliment the blue armor and add some interest.

The face looks good in the close up, but rather flat in the other pics. More highlighting might be helpful here.

You also do a good job of not over drybrushing everything. Many, if not most, of my early miniatures were drybrushed to the point of almost being pastel....

You are definately on the right track. :D

Heyyyy.. you again lol

I really like him.. and that scheme.. looks nice. You\'re right about the subtle highlights, he could use something more drastic.. but not over the top though. And one more thing bugging me is the bolter... is it just this plain black or is it the pic :| ?
Also painting some of the details in varying colors could help him stand out.. like the skull on the sleeve or the buttons on his back.

And if you would like some good recipes for flesh with GW colors... www.pbase.com/badaab :)

EDIT.. fully read your comment.. including highlight on bolter :) Sorry, but try mixing very small amounts of Shadow Grey into Black about 3 times.. then even smaller amounts of Fortress grey about 2 times :)

thanks much, for the comments.

especially in regards to the flesh tones, and highlighting the bolter casing... I was just alittle afraid of screwing it up, or have it end up looking like a monochrome tron prop :p

Should I consider repainting the grenades red or orange, perhaps?

thanks again..

Gabekun...

...there\'s insufficient highlight or else it was too subtle.

i also think that the blue is inappropriate and the colour scheme is somewhat flat.

otherwise, its a good effort.

sorrie if i sounded too critical but these are my honest comments.

look into adding more highlighting cum shading, changing the blue and finding complementary colours to breathe life into the mini.

Thank you for the comments (especially honest ones, which I am always wanting)... as for the colors, my army is a sucessor chapter to the Dark Angels, so I wanted some overall darker colors... When I began painting the figure, I was going to do the undersuit in a light tan, but I didn\'t think that would fit the scout theme all that well (especially for the snipers), and the dark grey would seem more stealthy

Originally, I had used Regal blue, but found it to be just TOO dark, although adding some silver trim to the shoulder pads did help to break things up... but the scouts obviously don\'t have the trim on their pads...

perhaps I will try Regal blue once more, and apply the layered highlights alittle more drastically to help bring out the details...

thanks again.
