I'm struggling with making my black highlights "pop". Id pref to shade a bit of grey to a light grey but for whatever reason I cant seem to get it right. Some of my problems are the greys I have dont seem to glaze as well as the other colors as I get lighter. Since I'm going for a black to grey with a light grey edge highlight and want the transition seamless, I'm trying to water down the paint as much as possible since layering in my eyes wouldnt be possible going from pitch black to such a light grey

any advice/pictures of very high quality ulthwe with recipes for the black would be much much appreciated

Use a Black/Bone colour mix as your base colour, pure black for the shadow tones, add more bone gradually to achieve lighter grey.
Tthat way you'll have a colour tone/temperature similar to the helmets and won't look "Jarring".
