This mini was mostly used for experimenting with some different things:

1.I got some flow improver and tried several different recipes. That’s why some areas appear slightly different than others (smooth, not so smooth, etc). I finally settled on two that I like a lot.

2. Gem work and freehand. Since she has a gem, I decided to give it a try. Not sure about the results, but the first time I did skin it didn’t turn out right, either. I didn’t want to get too elaborate with the tattoo, so I drew up a quick design that I was pretty sure I could do.

3. Painting technique. I wanted to get a better understanding of layering and how to thin my paints. Her cloak and leg band are the best examples of what I did. They’re not actually purple (well, they are, but that’s not how I painted them). I gave them a basecoat of blue, and then went over them with a very thin coat of red. The idea was that if it came out too red, then I wasn’t thinning it enough; too blue and it was too thin.

For the most part, I was pretty close to the right mix, so it came out as the purple color. After that, I used blues for the shadows and reds for the highlights, always keeping the paint thin enough to let the under colors show through. Most people probably already know this and how to do it, but it might be helpful for my fellow newbies and it was extremely helpful to me.

Definitely a learning experience all around.

well, the hair could use some more shading but the gem looks really good though. keep it up. did the voting thing also

For me the hair looks good..depends on your taste in blondes I suppose...

regards the gem the technique looks good but simplifying the lighting a little will help.
So the top left as I look at it needs to be darkest with just the extreme white spots for the light.I find it best to decide on the colour I want the gem to be.I do a 50\'50 mix of black and the colourI want paint the whole gem in this .Gradually blending up the base colour so that approx halfway you are pure Base colour.Then start adding highlight colour in and continue blending across.The final highlight will be pure highlight colour in a tiny crescent. All highlights should be a crescent shape that is around 3/4 the size of the gem.

With the tattoo although I like what you\'ve done It is difficult to pick up on the photo. I have always been in the camp that bold is beautiful..Especially when first starting freehand it is better to start with nice bold colours that provide a good contrast and make it easier to see what your doing.

overall I like the paint it is always great to see people developing it is the greatest thing the internet has done to this hobby.

If I were to offer 1 overriding point to bear in mind it would be to look for a little more contrast in your colours this can often be the thng that really brings a mini to life..

@demonherald: thanks for the tips on gem painting. I\'ll have to try that on the next one. My first instinct with the tattoo was to leave it bold, but I thought it would be too much, so I gave it a thin coat of the flesh highlight. Guess I should\'ve trusted my instinct considering most people are saying the same thing you are.

I think that your instinct on the tattoo was kinda right, but you have gone a bit too far toning it down. I think a little toning down is going to do a good job of tying it to the model and making it look more natural (And I think it takes a large amount of freehand skills to pull off the really sharp and dark tattoos seen on stuff by people like Fluffy) but yours, it removes the contrast too much.

As has been said, that\'s what you need more of across the whole mini - contrast. Some lining to diferentiate the elements and more range of tones from shading to highlights to make it pop. There\'s nothing wrong with this and it looks like your ability with a brush is all good, but you need to make the models shout more.

Seriously though, I think your painting is neat and tidy. A few highlights on the hair might make it pop. The color of her boots is too close to her skin tone I think. Overall very good. The face is very neat and that\'s a big obstacle for a lot of folks, so congrats!
