LOTR or 40k - or Warhammer ?

Hi Guys

All very new to this stuff and don\'t have a GW store for a few hundred miles from here and a few thousand miles for one that speaks my language well :)

I\'m interested in wargaming (can I call it that) but don\'t have anyone to play with yet - so ...

Which of the games is the most fun, liley to have the most appeal to new people and is sensibly easy for new people to learn?

I bought a few white dwarfs and flicked through them and have started learning how to paint some figures but as for gaming with them I have no idea

Suggestions please

lotr used to be fun but they had an overhaul on the rules ages ago, also it\'s play base was on the most kids who are all priced out now, so warhammer or 40k are better investments.

Warhammer 40k is probably your best bet for just starting. It\'s the easiest of the three systems to learn and plays fairly quick. Let\'s compare this to the game of checkers.

Warhammer Fantasy is a bit more complicated and requires you to think a few moves (turns) ahead. Think of this like chess. However 40k and Fantasy both use similar game mechanics. If you learn one it\'s quite easy to learn the other.

LOTR is nice, but it has a totally different play style from 40k and Fantasy, hence why most people aren\'t too familiar with it, are afraid to try it, or just say it\'s utter crap (which I would disagree). It\'s pretty easy to learn, about on par with 40k.

Ultimately I would just say to pick an army that you think is cool and that you would enjoy building/painting, and go with that game system. All three are fun, so choose by the \"cool factor\". :)

Hope this is helpful.

Thanks for the comments so far.

The life of the \'investment\' is an issue for sure and I see what you are saying the 40k and WH - don\'t see those dissapearing any time soon.

Based on what I \'think\' I know from what I have read it seems like you can play a decent game with less figures in 40k - that definately has an appeal as for starters I will need to supply everything (ie two armies)

The thing that puts me off slightly with 40k is the tanks and things - I don\'t know why but I just don\'t like the bigger vehicles for some reason

Another thing to look at is Warmachine and/or Hordes. Locally a lot of the Warhammer players have been swapping over to Privateer Press. The main draw is that there is only one book to buy (no Codex/Army Books) and a starter army only costs $51 (Canadian).

I\'ve recently picked up the rulebook for Warhamachine for under $10 on eBay.

There are other alternatives as well: Legends of the High Seas always seemed pretty cool to me. Starship Troopers has some nice looking minis. Babylon 5 caught my eye once. etc.

have a look at which club closest to you have nice people and atmosphere and see what they play. play some of the games that took your eye.

dont let clubs with kids put you off. some of them are just as good as the adult players. I play Lodrs mostly and little 40k starting fantasy too. I like the modeling and painting mostly ps i am over 37 and so is half our club that play lodrs

HI THARE

YES ME AGEN well me i whot to say well WHF if going to by your self and if you can get some one els invoed you need two armys thats why non GW minis ho the last WHF army you get are dark elvs or drow ALL exsp KAOS you can get NON GW look at TMP GOOGLE that the tmp has a hole list of manfaters on it well thanks agen WKJR

I think LotR is the best out of the three, because it is cheapest, requires the least models to play, and the play style is the best out of GW\'s systems, because you can react to your opponent, rather than being blown away before you get a chance to act.
