Lumps, Bumps and Hairs

not what you think. itrying out vallejo with little matte medium in with about 2;1 water. im doing it overa farliy larged curved surface, a warp spider jump pack. ive apllies something like 5 thin layers, but its still a bit lumpy and uneven. any tips?

something it might be - where are you painting? is it dusty in there? (if it\'s outside you can forget a smooth finish in britain at least, thpough come to think of it i haven\'t checked where you\'re from)

if your brush already has lumps in it then watering down the paint won\'t make much difference. also if the pallette is dusty, or if the cloth you clean your brushes with is prone to shedding fibres onto the brush (don\'t use toilet roll! just don\'t do it! kitchen roll works better)

Also make sure that your palette is cleaned of old paint. In recent months I\'ve been thining down my paint more than I used to. I don\'t seem to be able to get away with having old paint on my palette any more as the fresh paint tend to lift it, resulting in solid flecks of paint appearing in whatever colour I currenly have diluted. I now wipe it out once every couple of hours or at the end of a session.

How was the surface before you started? Sometimes the paint just brings to light slight irregularities that were there before it was applied, just harder to see with only a coat of primer.

it could be that the mini was not cleared of all the flash, did you sand down the mini prior to painting?

Possibly dirt in the brush?
Been caught that way myself more times than I want to admit to.

Was the primer coat smooth? You can get little bumps on the surface if you spray from a bit too far away and some of the primer drops dry on the way to the surface of the mini. Too much humidity when spray priming also affects the surface.
