Today I spoiled myself a bit ^^
I had to look up on the dictionary what that mugshot was about... LOL ^^ new word for me!
And as for the title of this post:

Last year month by month I got me the full set of scale75 colours, and now I wanted to test their "new" line for fantasy... and as I want to improve my flesh and skin skills for this 2016 I took this set.
First impression is that they are matt, but not as matt as their prior range. More in between the matt and satin. And you need a LOT less shaking to have them ready!!
Immediately fell in love with the sc11-Bloodfest crimson. (wine colour second from the left) Also those three skin tones will add to the collection of the regular flesh set.
Must say that before all this colour hoarding madness I only had three skin tones from Miniature paints and I painted with them for years. So I see I may have a little bit of a collectors issue.. with sc75 want them all!! xD xD
And that bust from Fer Miniatures "Einar Erikson" will be my first bust, I saw it painted by another Cmon member (can't remember who) a couple of months ago and I wanted to try my hand at it, so now it's on my bag of greys and on the list of "to do's"

My favourites: metaln alchemy (steel), wood and leather, flesh set, blood and fire, and both of the NMM sets.
Oh, I needed to check his Wip, it is indeed very similar to his avatar, but it's not the same mini. On the paints topic, I had the opportunity to renew my full set since the once I used before weren't available any longer on my town (distributor closed a few years ago) so I was in between sc75 and vallejo (with some of gw washes), but I saw good feedback everywhere with scale so I bought the metal'n alchemy steel set and got completely impressed by them. So I threw myself into the brand and bought set after set of the regular range during last year. xD

I've just ordered the metal and alchemy steel set for myself and the inktensify set ArchArad as a birthday present - shhhh, she doesn't know yet
Can't wait to use them. Scale75 only came onto my radar recently but I am suddenly seeing everywhere and they usually get great reviews.
I'm also looking forward to seeing you progress with that bust (when it comes up), it looks like fun.

These paints look great. I think I'm going to have to invest in some this year. Same with brushes - I 'be only got two and they're starting to look a bit sorry for themselves.

Just remember they wont give the same result as the GW washes because they are inks so you need to treat them differently. They dry to a shinny-satin finish and the bottles come SEALED so if you do not open them and just go and squeeze them you will have a free flowerpower t-shirt with them..... :clown::clown:They are great indeed, you just need to get used to them because they are a bit different.
On the brushes topic, I read on John's thread that those new GW are pretty good... if you are in doubt you can always take those W&N 7 series. In my opinion they (W&N) have an excellent tip and are super soft. Save your old ones for heavy dutty works (mixing, pigments, drybrushing, glueing or even modelling... etc...) when they are completely dead, you can just cut the points between the metallic part and the wood, and use them as sculpting tools with whatever you fancy attached to the tip.

Thanks for that. In what way are the paints different? I'm used to paint out of tubes (I use these: http://www.artistmaterial.co.uk/dal...set-10x22ml/?gclid=CPzEvIWGrMoCFVXGGwodwToE1g) so not sure how they differ.
I have a W&N series 7 brush (a 000) which is great, so I'll definitely get more of them. The other one is a Citadel layer(?) brush, I think. I'm thinking I probably need 3 in total: a biggish one for big areas, a littler one for, um, littler areas... and a replacement 000 for the details. Does that sound right? I know it's not a BaM-sized collection, but I can't imagine what else I might need given my complete lack of experience...

Yeah, she's been talking about trying inks for a while, spurred on I'm sure by Tero's dragon. She's already got all the citadel washes (and all their other paints too... Her dirty little secret) so I think she's interested in trying something different.I am more than sure she will approve it

Jealousy makes you nasty - of course I have the complete citadel range (well, except for the edge paints), you never know what strange colour combinations will strike my fancy.

There is nothing wrong with GW paints. they are high quality and readily available , in fact more easily accessible than most other brands even in places like Toronto where i live so I think that gives them an edge because i can pick them up easily instead of ordering online and having to wait a few eeks or pay a premium for faster shipping. That said they are a bit more expensive when compared to other brands, but that's the only down side from my perspective

Yeah, I use them too, although my collection isn't nearly as extensive as ArchArad's. They are pretty much the only paint we can get locally and importing down here is a real pain.
My only real issue with them is that they are extremely thick out of the pot but since I'm thinking anyway it's not really a problem. I'm also not too find of the difference between the base and layer paints but I'm learning to work around that.

On the paints:
Wow quite surprised then.... if you shift to a more specialized paint you'll probably step up your game further then.... I do not know the brand you are using though. I just used paints from tube when at school and I remember them quite thick!! Try a couple of colours from whatever brand to see if you like them and compare them to your tube paints, then you see for yourself whatever you prefer. I would recommend you the "layer" range from GW or a Vallejo Model Color one. You may also want to check this new cheaper brand that started on this forums "warpaints" Since I don't think you can get to sc75 anywhere next to you. But I must warn you "YOU ARE ENTERING TO THE DANGEROUS WORLD OF PAINT BRAND PERSONAL PREFERENCES" xD xD xD
On the brushes:
You are quite right, three sizes are correct imo. Being the quality of the point more important than the size of the brush. I can tell you what I use and you can try for yourself whatever suits you best.
Escoda optimo series in sizes: 2, 1 and 0. (these are now my "battle" brushes)
W&N 7 series, in sizes: 1 and 0 (for freehand and for when I need the extra control they bring)
GW old red and blue series, in sizes: large, standard and detail (equivalent to a 1, a 0 and maybe a 00) to mix and rough works
And a variety of cheap brushes for pvc gluing, terrain and bigger jobs (with a couple of flat and rectangular amongst them)
Me neither LOL I will keep him for the future I won't paint him with my left hand for sure though.... xDoh i have the little guy too. love him! Can;t wait to see what you do

mmmm I would say that the difference it's in their thickness and the quantity of pigments/medium in them.
GW range from more thick to less (? means I haven't tried them):
Dry --> Base (Foundation) --> Layer --> Edge? --> Air?
You won't use regular Scale75 paints out of the pot either, though the fantasy range seems almost usable out of the pot and feel a lot more fluid (cannot assure 100% this because I just shacked them and painted the caps but the difference it's really noticeable).

Okay I have been busy this weekend painting another Mithril miniature, this time is an elven warrior from Nargotrhond, it is still WIP but it is almost finished as after taking pics I painted his belt and boots, so, arms and sword are the only parts missing....
I started adding a little sandypaste (from Vallejo) and some bigger "rocks" to the base to add a little bit of variation within the base limitations, then worked all the metals with scale75 metal'n alchemy steel set paints for a shiny/polished TMM kind of look. Next I simply washed the base with GW Agrax Earthshade to make everything on it to stand out a bit. Followed by the eyes, the face and hair. As always I fought and struggled with the eyes to make them look correct.... in size/symmetry and gazing direction...
Then shifted to the cape "outer side", which I wanted to work in blue colours, followed by the inner part of the cap, in which I experimented (or better read as "had a ton of fun") with the texture, painting a first layer of a leatherette brown and then dabbing with a sponge (foam from a blister) and some chestnut brown and black inks (inktensity set sc75), then added some very thin lines of a light beige in between the layers of inks. At some point in between the inner part of the cape and the face I worked the wings on the helmet in a nice range of brown-greys.
And all of this words needed an image to sum it up! So here it comes:

I really wanted to try that sponge dabbing thingy, that I read about at sprocket's and Pariahrob WIPs so I ended up trying it on here ^^ You can see in the pics how shiny the inks became. There is also some purple and blue inks on the shadowed parts of the cape.
I also tried some pigments on the base but they are nearly not noticeable and should do a second or third layer to see if I like the result more. I was also aiming for a more desaturated look, but fun come in the way and I couldn't remedy that xD
With a bit more of perspective than before I would like to say that shifting between scales is like changing from a costume to another one. I cannot stop recommending all of you to try different scales, the feelings you get when painting are really different!!

Very nice progress with this mini Maenas. :good: The technique you used on the inside of the cloak is very effective. Are the lighter blue stripes on the outer cloak a design or highlighted areas? If they're a design I'd recommend possibly lining them up more with the detailing on the trim of the cloak.

I like the colours on this, and may have to steal the sponge idea as it looks great.
The stripes don't quite line up correctly as Arch says - it looks like they should go from the semicircles up to a point at the neck. They also veer. Slightly left and don't follow the angle of the cloak.
It's a expanse of space, so maybe worth trying some more of your lovely freehand on here? You could always draw a pattern on in pencil or micron pen first to make sure you're happy with it. I think you could really level up on this one.
