Magnetic Warhammer Fantasy Empire General (\"Final\" Pic 2/17)

The new Warhammer Empire General comes with so many modeling options that I was immediately drawn to the model. The sculpting is excellent, especially for plastic, and so I had to pick one up. This seemed like the perfect model to experiment with rare earth magets on.

Like most first projects I learned a lot about how to (and not to) work with tiny, tiny magnets -- but I\'m very happy with the result and plan on making a habit of this.

All of the arms, heads and even the cloak can be attached via magnets.

Anyone know how important the dagger arm is? The shield is attached to that arm and doing so by magnet isn\'t really practical -- especially as it looks silly if you don\'t cut off the dagger.

Wow that is an insane amount of work, but so cool. I bet you could make a fortune selling these, even unpainted.

I\'ve seen some cool work with magnets, but never an entire boxed sets worth with every part interchangable.

I personally assume the dagger isn\'t that important, just there for looks anyway, as it\'s not like there are rules for \'daggers\' specifically. It\'s probably there for a \'two hand weapon\' option if anything.

Nice work MJ. I\'m a big fan of magnets with the new GW plastic kits, but the price has jumped on Ebay in the last year or so i\'ve found.

Make sure you post some painted pics for us to see of the guy in his different combinations!

Thanks for the kudos on this one. Of course not every part got a magnet. The cherub, sheathed sword and gorget aren\'t going to leave the sprue. I\'ll also pick one of the two shield for the shield arm... and maybe make the other in to a 40k combat shield

I will certainly get some painted pics up as I go... as soon as I make some progress on the 5 commissioned minis, the Leman Russ project, a BT dreadnought, some ME10 and ME11 minis... and everything else on my desk.

Stupid fun hobby = too many projects.

Another question

Is there a rule effecting base size for the General on foot? Because the piece is magnetic I\'d like to add a post, fence, dead tree or similar to pick up and move the base -- but it won\'t fit on the 20mm base.

I got some painting done today. Unfortunately the metallics are so reflective that the whole thing looks totally washed out. This is actually quite likely the best painting I\'ve ever done

The last image is me lifting the entire model by the tip of the lance. I managed to pick up and move the model across the room -- all holding on to the lance that was simply attached via the magnet. Fun stuff.

Now I\'m off to find a tutorial on photographing metallic paints

I\'m going to try and find a light tunnel on eBay -- for the moment the pictures came out better with a tinted background... still losing a lot of detail though. Thanks to the folks that gave feedback on the photo process.

I still need to get in there and do the clean-up but it\'s coming together. You can make out the freehand on his saddle and reins in this one at least -- though a bit messy on one side of the reins.

I am particularly pleased with the highlighting and blending on the horse. More than anything else I want to be able to capture that in the photos.

As in the previous photo I\'m picking up a fully assembled version of the model by the magnetically attached lance. Everything, including the cape, can be removed. The body is, of course, glued to the horse.

Gaming wise the general should be on a 20mm base and not any larger. It\'s looking cool too.

Made some additional progress on the horse and finished the first of the arms. I decided to tackle the lance as it was going to be the most difficult -- now just some clean-up on the stripe and I think I\'ll be happy.

I was worried about basing the standing body on a 20mm square because I didn\'t know if you\'d be able to move him. Having picked this guy up by the lance and moved him across the room I\'m no longer worried.

Looking great Mr J, I am currently painting this guy up too and you have made a great start (although I DO envy the cool idea, I don\'t envy you having to paint up every bit on the sprue!)

Thanks for the feeback -- this one is my first attempt at anything other than gaming quality for eBay. I\'m not sure how it\'ll do but it was a good excuse to pick up the model, play with magnets and get in some practice.

It\'s also a good distraction from the FOUR big projects I\'m not working on -- and different enough from the current commissions to keep everything interesting.

I hope to have one head and the shield arm finished tonight too so I can finally get an idea as to how the model is coming together as a whole.

Oh, hey, look at that... I never painted the tail. Sigh and oops.

@krom1415: Yeah, that crow was pretty obnoxious. As for the cherub... well, any cherub with gears in his gut is bound for one of my marines, of course.

Another set of arms finished today; the only up side to being home sick, I suppose. I also finished the cloak and included the symbols of Sigmar in freehand... but I\'m not entirely pleased with the result and hope for some feedback. For now it\'s time to take a break. At this stage only two sets of arms, two heads and one body to go. Oi.

Yeah, looking at the photos I think so too. It looks good on the table and on the shelf but in the photos... not so much. What I did was a base of Boltgun and lines of Chainmail coming in from the edge.

There is a *lot* of clean-up I want to do on the rest of the model and I\'m saving it all for one go -- I\'ll add the blade to that list.

For the horse I used the guide published in White Dwarf; it\'s an excellent little tutorial.
