Magnifier or not?

This is a first post for me on this board so be gentle.

I am a long time painter, and have come to that age where my eyes while not bad, are not what they used to be in my thirties.

So my question is how many of you use magnifiers of jewelers visor loupes? If you do, what brands and vendors did you use? Magnification?

Experiences and learning curves encountered?

My personal preference is for \"Clip on Magnifiers\" for my reading classes. (+3 Magnification).
Some people can get away with single magnifier lenses, however I can\'t as I lose the Depth perception and can\'t judge the paint placement.

Hey, welcome aboard! I\'d suggest the readin glasses if you\'re painting station isn\'t a dedicated area and you have to pack up and take it away after each session (one less thing to concern yourself with) and the magnifying lamp if you\'ve got a dedicated space to put it.

I tried a single magnifier lens/lamp \'jewellers lamp\' and (as Mike said) it lost all the depth perception. As a lamp it\'s great, as a magnifier its rotten. I would try some of the \'goggle\' ones, never have though.

We are (mostly) gentle, if its not a \'Vallejo or GW\' paint question. Use the forum search and you\'ll be right ;)

A head loupe works for me but it is more a age thing, the older I get the worse my eyes are :eek:(

Don\'t worry about the light on the thing though it is a waist of time. I like the head loupe because it does not enclose my face/eyes which means it doesn\'t send my eyes do lally between figure and paint tray.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help. I\'ll start looking for a head loop I think.

I don\'t think reading will work for me since I am so dang nears sighted to begin with.

As for the GW/Vallejo questions, I usually end up fielding them myself, not generally on the asking end.

get your eyes tested mate, and let them know that you need the glasses for close up work (tell them the distance you are usualy working at and take a model to demonstrate)

that\'s what i did and i only need the head mag now for eyes and teeny tiny detail work.
it saves me getting the constant headaches i used to get relying on using a head mag for fulltime painting.

Actually I was just in December and tested out 20/20 with glasses. Just need a bit of a boost at times.

I picked up a head visor at 2.5x and I find it helps me when I\'m tired or I can\'t make out what a detail is. (If I didn\'t paint when I was tired, I would never paint, as I\'m always tired.)
I tried the higher magnification out but it instantly hurt. If you can somewhere (like a show) where they are selling some and will let you try them out I would recommend it try before you buy.

I\'ve used both, depends what I\'m doing,
with the \"big lens on a stick\" I found if I touch my nose on the bottom edge, everything stays in focus and I don\'t fog it up by breathing on it
